Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

fiesty76 Yes that walk and stretching before walk helped out a lot . I usually don't have problems with my sciatica but was in a bad position for it to flare up . Stretching is the key to us who are up in age . If we dont do this we will be cripples and won't be able to get out of bed . With this virus still rampant how are you doing? and is there a lot in your area . I'm afraid it will come back with everyone not abiding by the rules ,mask, washing hands and I wear gloves when out to grocery stores . Have a good day

Hi, @lioness, I'm staying put and still ordering in groceries. People here are out everywhere; most by far with no masks and aren't distancing in stores or parks so I'm just not ready to take chances. Surprised numbers here haven't really spiked but the mayor has stopped his weekly briefings so local news seems more like it used to be. One good friend in the univ. hospital with triple by-pass heart surgery; the other in critical care with cancer at the private hospital...both hospitals are allowing visitors. I am usually good about hospital visits but not now because we do have some cases of COVID in each and I'm just staying away because of the size of both hospitals; parking garages and distance to get to patient's rooms. Are you resuming more frequent outings?

Hi, everyone. I’m just going to keep on walking! Though not today! We’re having a major thunderstorm! Had a DEXA scan today and I don’t want to get blown over. You know, we’ve lost track of walkers, exercises—are you still out there @starko, @jakedduck1 and @1065408 ?

Still walking. Had time between appts today and scoped out a local riverfront walking path. Going to have a mini adventure with daughter and grandsons there next week. Maybe even a picnic.

Hi, @becsbuddy, Becky, I've been wondering too if some of our "more regular" walking posters reached their destinations and are just waiting for the rest of us to catch up? vbg

Will you have a ff-up with your DEXA doc or p.a. for a report on your results? My p.a. goes over my scan each yr with me before giving me the Reclast infusion and I appreciate her interpreting the results for me. While my goal is maintaining bone density, I have shown slight improvement with the Reclast. Are you taking a bone density specific med? Has it shown an improvement in your scan results?

@sueinmn, Oh, Sue, a riverwalk with daughter and grands sounds purely loverly! Turning a bit green with envy but do let us know about your adventure. It sounds like great fun!

Still out here and enjoying following the group. Haven’t reported walking minutes because they are way low due to lung condition. Continue to do what I can while enjoying the walkers chatter. Keep walking!!

I am happy to share that I have started my morning walks again! I have walked Tue, Wed, and Thurs. And each day have increased my distance and taken it slowly and cautiously as I don't want to overdo it. I have enjoyed the fresh quiet mornings with the birds chirping and even heard the across-town train whistle.
My foot pad looks like a fingerless glove for toes, and my chubby big toe was being pinched because it was too tight. So I picked out the seam, and resewed a new seam allowing for a wider big toe.
Today is saved for yard work. I have a new battery powered weed-eater to break in while hubby mows the grass.
