Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Well, I confess, I haven't walked the last two days - unless you count in the garden - but my Fitbit is still over 10,000 steps by the end of the day... and today I got to play chase and tag with my young grandsons so I ran too.
We played at the birthday parade my daughters arranged for the 4 year old to replace the adventures he misses so much. And I got HUGS! My beloved son-in-law built a vinyl sheeting "hug wall" so we can be on one side, they on the other with sleeves to put our arms in to hug each other. My 4 yo grandson didn't want to try it at first, but then he couldn't get enough. The 16 mo not so much - but he'll get there. My daughters and I had tears in our eyes when we got to hug for the first time since New Years Day!
Tomorrow I will start my day with a long walk as I count my blessings.

@mayofeb2020, @contentandwell,@funcountess,@lioness, It is easy to feel down right now, however lets bring this discussion back on track.

I suggest that we return our attention toward the positive support and encouragement for everyone who is dealing with health issues and who depend on our encouragement along the way. When good friends gather, it is easy to become engaged in conversations that veer off topic to the exclusion of others. That is why I want to ask you to return to the intent of our virtual walking group. I have copied this from the original introduction to this discussion on Feb. 19 by @becsbuddy.
"So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect."

I have my podiatrist appointment tomorrow. Yeah! And soon hope to be back up and walking.
Are you planning to walk today? If not. What words of encouragement do you have to offer to to someone who is feelinf "iffy" about getting up and taking the first difficult step?

Jump to this post

@rosemary, I can't remember who is getting out and about and who is staying more in place. Will this podiatrist appt.be one of your first forays back into a more public setting?

I'm asking because my kidney doc's office called last week with a reminder of an early June appt. I told her I just didn't feel comfortable going for the labs required before the appt. She'd said they were open or doc could do a phone consult. I asked to reschedule and then she 1st suggested a couple of weeks...that didn't work for me; Agreed to an Aug. appt. because I think by then we may hopefully have a lull in virus cases before facing the possibility of more starting in the fall.

I've walked each day starting Friday. Two friends sent by EMS to hospital emergency and admission for life threatening issues combined with other horrors of the week just overwhelmed and stopped me in my tracks. Just kept tv and internet news off all day yesterday and feel more myself this morning. Think I'll be doing at least a short walk each early morning this week just to help restore my equilibrium.

Are you expecting good news from your doc that will allow you to start back with your walks?

@;lioness My husband is a Cyber Security Manager and I want to let you know zoom can be dangerous. There are hackers that get into it. I know many have it to have meetings at our church. There has been businesses hit. Skype is safe. And there are other ones out there too. Take care of yourself you are very special. Jeanie

I just am on here and use my phone thats about it . I just had a zoom from the facilitator of the exercise class with inforation I need . It is closed to everyone else so just us who signed up for it . I do have Skype that I use when I connect with other people. Are you getting excited and probably nervous that is a big surgery you are having . I use to work in the O.R. with the Dr. You have faith in your Dr that is half the battle ,you'll be fine push out those dark clouds. We are with you on the table ,let us know when you can

@contentandwell.. In the greater Los Angeles it was a very scary picture. A curfew is in effect but don't know for how long. There were looters everywhere, setting fire to police cars and businesses. Peaceful demonstration is one thing, but violence and looting is another. Small businesses are already suffering because of the pandamic, now many shop owners may have to close their businesses forever. How is that going to help revitalize the economy in the community?

@mayofeb2020 I agree with you it is so sad about all the looters. I just don't understand it all. It's sad that police officer did what he did, but he's going to pay for it. I feel Jesus is looking down and saying I need to help. I feel it will get better. My daughter told me about the he time people cannot be out and that was in Des Moines.
I hope the other officers get more than just fired. They were just as bad as the one who killed him. They could have stopped him instead of just watching. I pray for peace. Jeanie

Hi,
The shoe store is Flight Club the other was ToriK both high end shoe stores. The jewelry store lost all their jewelry. What is wrong with the people? One word OPPORTUNIST. They see the opportunity, and just jump right in. None of this was about George Floyd.
He was just the excuse.
I hope the shop keepers had good insurance.
Your daughter and family I’m sure are fine, looters want the retail areas. Fires are seen for many miles.
Did you talk to her today?
Tell her to stay in with windows closed. Not good to breathe in the smokey air.
Take care,
Funcountess

@funcountess Where does your daughter live? I agree with one person that we have to think positive. Keep doing what you are doing like walking. I'm so proud of you. I can't walk yet too much pain in my back. I think after the surgery they will want me to walk a little. Just telling people if you don't hear from me I'm either at Mayo Hospital or recovering.

@mayofeb2020 This is all so heartbreaking, sad, and stressful. My husband was watching the news on TV last night and I got to the point where I had to leave the room, it scares and worries me. My concern was made even worse since that was right after talking to my daughter. I pray for her safety. Her husband is a great guy, brilliant but more intellective than physical so not a huge help probably.

On the news, they were showing an athletic shoe store being totally looted, was that one of the ones you mention? Someone pulled up in front of it in a car to steal more shoes and the license plate was very visible so I hope they can arrest and charge the car's owner. Most of the people were pedestrians going in off the street. What is the matter with these people?

@lioness I don't even want to think about what's next.

@contentandwell I seem to not let it bother me. I an concerned, but I think my mind is a lot on my surgery. I pray that it will end soon and that the people will start to not riot. I also heard of another police doing a choke hold on a guy, he was fired. What do those people think, I just don't know. I'm leaving it up to God. Jeanie

@lioness I would love to have a rumba, but my husband doesn't believe in them. They you for putting me on your prayer list. If I drink too much water I get sick to my stomach. I put two Macho Green bags in the bottom of the glass, add ice and water. Believe it or not it makes ice tea. It's a great tea to have, but has caffeine in it. I have another one that doesn't have caffeine it's not a green tea, but another on that's good for you. I can't take a vitamin because my vitamin D was twice the level it should have been. He changed my calcium to calcium citrate. I make a protein drink every morning. Thanks for your help and prayers! Jeanie

@lilypaws I have a calcium citrate drink also everyday . The Dr. for my osteoporosis wants me to take 1200mg calcium a day along with the other ones she perscribed .
