Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I did!! It is a sunny and warm day so 2 laps for me. I got busy putting away the groceries I got yesterday and making an inventory so I had a late start. It's almost 3 already. Whole Foods is delivering something tomorrow. I had that order sitting for a few weeks and I was surprised to get a delivery time. If course when I went over my order, it was only partially filled. Oh well.

@mayofeb, Happy to know you are receiving and putting away groceries! Who would have ever thought there would come a time when "getting to put away groceries" produced a thrill????? And yes, even if orders are partially filled, I'd think whatever arrives would be worth a small tappy toe dance, yes???

Well, I guess I’d better checkout all those YouTube exercises today, I’m not going out! We got 12” of snow last night and it’s still coming down! Oh, oh, oh.

Oh wow! 12 inches of snow! Here I am lamenting it's going to be a mere 70 today, 10 degrees colder than yesterday. I'm in a pretty good mood now. WF delivery this morning, got my 3 tubs of tofu! No dark chocolate or Dijon mustard. Didn't get my salmon but will keep trying.... Yes, definitely walk today. Pulled out my sewing machine yesterday, will try to make face mask today. Please join me in a prayer for those affected by tornadoes. I hope they get the help they nerd with every type of resource spread so thin.

Even though I finally got mine still my pancake mix didn't come but I have flour so will go scratch now . Get you recipe books out .

Gee, did anyone go walking today?? I made myself get out because it’s sunny and more snow is expected tomorrow. I’ll sure be glad when it’s warm everyday. I get tired of snow! Happy walking!

@becsbuddy I didn’t manage to walk yesterday but I plan to today. Yesterday I rode my recumbent bike for 8 miles, easier on my legs due to no impact, and some balance exercises.
This got me thinking about whether other exercises are equivalent to “10,000 steps” so I did some googling. 10,000 steps is definitely beneficial but that number was actually a Japanese marketing tool!

This all being said, I believe that other exercises are just as beneficial, particularly if your walking does not raise your BPM making walking definite cardio. There are a number of tools online if you google to determine the BPM you should be looking to achieve.
This is one, but there others that I like more but couldn’t find them!.

Here’s another, but still not the one I’ve used in the past. Gender should be part of the equation.

I got this from my daughter-in-law who under normal circumstances is a nurse working with stress testing.
“220- your age is max predicted HR. We try to get our patients to 85% of that during our stress test.”,
So from what I have read between 70% and 85% is a good BPM to strive for. I rarely get to that 85% number. The only time I can is on the elliptical.
Bottom line, it seems as if other exercise that raises your heart rate is just as good as walking, plus strength training and exercises for balance are very important.

Yes, I have been thinking about the whole 10000 step deal too - what I learned was at least 30 minutes a day 5 times a week is key - so 30 minutes for me is about 4000 steps on my walk, then I get another 4000 steps from my daily activities in the house & yard - if not, I take a second walk in the evening to bump it up a bit. Like yesterday, I spent a good 4 hours at the sewing machine, so did a little walk when I went out to dump the trash.

That's all good information, thanks. Did you ever receive my email? I just wondered because I didn't hear and wanted to make sure. Jennifer

I feel for you with that snow. Isn't it rather late in the season?
