Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

It’s Monday! Beginning of week #5! Some of you (myself excepted) are doing a great job! I found this motivational piece on Pinterest and it looked springy, so here it is! Have a great week!

Hi All. Hard to believe it’s week 5. So grateful for the group and the motivation to stay accountable. Small walks and some exercise. Goal is to improve. Stay safe and healthy.

Sue, I am sorry to hear that law enforcement is now stopping walkers in your community and telling them to go home. Nice you have a carport space for outdoor spacing but hope you are keeping distance between the line dancers?

Ginger, sounds like you still got in some exercise which is always a good thing. I've managed to make it to the end of March with my walks 3 x's/week. The locations have changed but both the schedule and self-discipline to honor my commitment is boosting my morale. Be safe on your business trip.

@pollyanne and @ccunning About making face masks: if you are on Facebook, go to Open Source COVID-19 Medical Supplies. They have more information than anyone wants to know! But they also have ointments and other supplies. Yo can always make masks that aren’t regulation and give them to friends. Have fun!

@pollyanne There are several different patterns on the internt right now. I have used the one posted by Deaconess Hospital most. Either using elastic as they show, or sewing double fold bias tape as ties across top and bottom. There is also a pattern on You Tube by sewing academy that is elastics straps around your head. The problem I have with wearing any mask is fogging up my glasses! Our county has a "sewing warriors" group, we are making 1000 masks a week ;))

@gingerw. Are these masks for the general population or for healthcare workers? It has been shown that countries with the highest number of mask wearers have had the most success in fighting the virus. I can understand the medical community wants the front line to have priority but regular people need protection too.

In South Korea, everyone wears mask. Here's a link to why this country has the most success in dealing with this virus.

It really is disrespect when others are not adhering to what their part is in all of this. Others are risking their lives. Ugh
I am sorry, do everything possible to take care of yourself. It really is one of the best ways for us to say thank you to those risking theirs.
