Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I think you added some zeros in there accidentally. You need to recheck your figures.

I said I wasn't sure about the figures. I will check later on if I have time. I'm off for my walk now.

Today I moved furniture, carried chairs, shifted fabric, and sewed face masks, in lieu of walking. Tomorrow it is supposed to rain most of the day, but we will have to go north to do some business, so walking will come on Tuesday. Stay safe and healthy, all!

Ginger, how did you make the face masks. I think they are important even when you shop during senior's hour.

@pollyanne There are several different patterns on the internt right now. I have used the one posted by Deaconess Hospital most. Either using elastic as they show, or sewing double fold bias tape as ties across top and bottom. There is also a pattern on You Tube by sewing academy that is elastics straps around your head. The problem I have with wearing any mask is fogging up my glasses! Our county has a "sewing warriors" group, we are making 1000 masks a week ;))

@jakedduck1 I definitely did have too many zeros for the world population. We have 8 billion but can only really support 4 billion humans. [A slight difference!] But we still have too many people.

Ginger, sounds like you still got in some exercise which is always a good thing. I've managed to make it to the end of March with my walks 3 x's/week. The locations have changed but both the schedule and self-discipline to honor my commitment is boosting my morale. Be safe on your business trip.

Today, in lieu of our walk, we will line dance on my friend's carport for an hour or so. Just so many times you can make the same 4-block loop in a week. Virus is increasing in our little county with its shelter-in-place order, so law enforcement is beginning to stop people and tell them to go home - so no road walking for us right now - just inside our little community.
Stay calm, stay safe & stay well everyone!
