Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hey, everybody! Looks like everyone is doing well with exercising or, at least thinking about it when they can’t. I heard a doctor on one of the news channels, say that now is a good time to get outdoors and try to exercise. You’ll be in better condition to fight off the virus if you do get it. So let’s keep going!
We’re starting wk#4: 5 min warm up 11min exercise and 5min cool down. Becky

@gingerw That must be difficult for him. But, I did just read that you don’t have to move fast or a great distance, you just need to move!
My younger daughter who is 44 does intermittent fasting. She is healthy but finds it a good way to control her weight. It seems to suit her so it's great. She has been doing this for over a year so it seems to work.
@mayofeb I think when someone is a vegetarian they are in this sort of danger with the sugar because many of them tend to eat too many of the bad carbohydrates. This was what was happening with my daughter and she had put on a lot of weight. After 20 years of being vegetarian she started to eat a little chicken and fish and along with the intermittent fasting she is now at a good weight. Sorry this isn't really about walking although I guess it all helps with the general health which also helps the walking.
@becsbuddy Did my Walk my outside around building felt good to get out and talk to those who journeyed out
The sun was out this morning so I got moving, slowly but surely. Actually I was painless, I would have walked longer because it was warmer outside than inside my home. I did managed to reached 5000 steps! Fitbit said I nailed my goal! Weather reports said it is going to be wet for the rest of the week. Yuck! Made some Cuban spicy black bean soup for lunch, waiting to video chat with my children when everyone is ready.
@mayofeb2020, Good for you! Sounds like a lovely day.
Yum, I love the sound of the black spicy soup. You have made me feel hungry. It is my morning here and so now I am going for my walk. I have more energy today and I'm feeling good!
I found this 3 ingredients soup online. Super easy, 2 cans of black beans drained, one can of diced tomato, one cup of broth or water. (I used a little more water), 1/4 teaspoon crushed red peppers, cooked 15 to 20 minutes. I added some cumin too. I put the soup in my Vitamix blender and it came out nice and smooth. A stick blender would work too. Season to taste.. I crumble some totilla chips on top.

So does walking from candy dish to candy dish or to get some cookies and the reward is much more pleasant.
Your soup sounds good but I suppose it has to be cooked. Oh well, it was a nice thought while it lasted.
