Functional dyspepsia
Hi everyone,
Really happy to be joining this community!
In 2013 I started experiencing symptoms of chronic dyspepsia as well as early fullness. Constantly feel discomfort in stomach, nausea and occasional constipation. The main problem is early fullness: I feel totally sick after a couple bites or sips of anything. In the last couple years I've lost a bunch of weight.
Four different medical teams have tried to figure out what's wrong. Two CT scans, an MRI, 4 endoscopies, a colonoscopy, multiple pathology tests, a gastric emptying study, and four upper-GI series. I've not undergone any procedures or been put on medication for more than a week or two at a time.
At the moment two different medical teams are arguing about what's wrong with me. One believes based on an MRI and CT scan that there is an outflow obstruction after the second part of my duodenum, which they think is annular pancreas or some close variant. They believe that by bypassing my duodenum they will relieve me of the symptoms. The other team (looking at the same images) thinks there isn't evidence to justify an operation and thinks the problem is functional. Both teams agree that the duodenum is slightly dilated, and there is some amount of narrowing after the second phase.
I don't know what to do since we've basically exhausted all of the different imaging and scope-based tests as far as I can tell.
If anyone has suffered from these symptoms before or been in a similar situation, I would greatly appreciate hearing your stories.
Thank you so much,
Joseph

anyone ?
Hi, why not try food elimination to see if something specific is causing it. FODMAP is a list of a lot of foods that cause problems for people. It will take more work on your part to do it but the results would be worth it.
@darweshalassi You might ask to try a different PPI medication. Some did not work well with me. Hiatal hernias can cause a lot of acid. Usual treatment when the PPI does not work is a Nissen fundoplication .. but many fail. Mine did and a repair failed. A procedure called LINX procedure has worked well for many people. The best thing to do right now is to ask maybe for a different PPI and work on reducing symptoms by diet. Spicy foods.. acidic foods can make the acid worse. I used to eat nothing but plain white rice for a few days when I had bad acid episodes. My hiatal hernia caused so much problems I had to have a gastric bypass.
My Nissen failed....1 in 6 fail according to Mayo doc.. try eating small meals slowly, chew food really well. Try small quantity Snacks between meals. Take multi-vitamin, gas-x, no carbonated beverages... Ken
Replying to your questuon about a hiatal hernia causing all of your problems I would say most likely. I have a hiatal hernia and have also had the Nissen fundoplication done. Mine has held up well up until the last year and now I am back to having significant issues. I was just diagnosed with Barretts and I'm not convinced that the Nissen wrap slid or is failing. It is causing breathing problems that they say are separate from my asthma. Anyway, my suggestion is to find a surgeon who has high success rate with working on fixing hernias. God bless.
I was diagnosed a year ago. I take a med that is called FDguard. It is for Functional Dispepcia. I eat small meals, and am on a small antidepressant. A lot of us also take propanol to relax the esophagus. Some days are better in fact you will get more days better than not. Good luck .
