Gabapentin side effects?
I am a regular on the Mayo Board! I don't know what I would do without it! Our doctors don't want to discuss openly the things about illnesses and side effets of drugs and other things. Anyway, my question to all of you is Gabapentin and it's side effects. I have been on it now for 6 months. My doctor raised me from 100mg. to now I am on 400mg. three times a day.
The problem is my tiredness! I happen to be in a friends office yesterday and she was taking some medicine. She said she was taking Gabapentin. I asked why and she said she had, had shingles back when and it still helped with the pain. I know the drug is percribed for many things that is why I take it for my issues.
I told her I had been taking it for about 6 months. She asked if I had been tired all the time, just out of the Blue. OF COURSE I SAID YES! She said it took her a year before she got out of the tiredness.
Let me know if any of you have experienced the same thing. Also let me know at what dosage you may be on? I know this is all confidential!
Again Thanks to The Mayo Clinic and Everyone who is kind enough to be open with their lives!
Sundance!

Razzle50, who are you? Do you work for Rick Berman? What proof/studies/anything can you offer to back up your assertion that gabapentin "puts weight on and causes cavities?" And why are you saying such things about gabapentin ? I have been taking it every day for a few years, it works well for me, I have no side affects, no cavities, no weight gain -- I couldn't live without it.
These Mayo Clinic forums have helped me a great deal - I learned much more about neuropathy (from people who actually have it) than my doctors could ever tell me. When we share our own experiences with each other, we help each other. When someone posts outrageous, unsubstantiated opinions, it is not helpful.
Everyone needs to listen to their own doctors and try different medicines until they find a combination that works for them. Medicines don't work the same way for everyone. Has it occurred to you that when you discourage people from trying a certain medicine you might be hurting them?
Peggy
@pfbacon thank you for the response to @razzle50 concerning gabapentin. My thoughts also were expressed in full by you. When we are placed on a medication it is for a specific reason and we can't always generalize side effects/issues with medication. One persons poison may be another persons gold!
Peggy, calm down. Who is Rick Berman? I'm with you as I too question how folks identify and isolate side effects from specific drugs and cavities dors seem to be a bit of a stretch. Given that, Lyrica and Gabapentin are many physicians go to drugs for alternatives to real pain drugs. (narcotics). I was given them both for several kinds of pain. Neither worked for me but neither had a side effects for me either. The nature of my pain, early on was that it came and went. Many of us are fooled by drugs that we start during the "went" part of the pain cycle. What bothers me the most about Lyrica, aside from the fact that for me it was worthless as the teats on a boar pig was that you pay the same dollars for 25mgs. per day as you do for 1200 mgs. per day. That is not right. Maybe it will change not that there is a generic for lyrica. Remrmber. These are drugs that were approved for controlling seizures. Any use for pain is an off label use and has only minimal testing for that purpose. Enough to insure safety. Efficacy, I don't know, I could not find info on that subject.
For neuropathy. I take amitriptyline. 25 to 50 mgs. per night. Powerful sleep aid without damsging the quality of my sleep. Also a mild anti depressant and who can't use that. I also have a pain pump.
who is Rick Beman dont know him I am just saying what I have read about Gabapentin under side effects. I will find the article and send to you but if you are having good luck that is fantastic news . For your info I took Gabapentin big dosages for about 5 years and it helped me alot pain wise . I am not slandering it some people it works some not ..sorry you feel that way.
I get all my info from Drugs .com and My dentist told me about the cavities ( Dry mouth} So sorry I got you upset ...https://www.drugs.com/sfx/gabapentin-side-effects.html..
I had dry mouth when I took lyrica. My dentist was concerned about that but wasn't sure which one caused it. It eas bad.
That happened to me when I took cyclobenzaprine aka Flexeril, years ago. Now I use Baclofen and it doesn’t cause same problems.
I use baclofen to prevent cramping. It is also sometimes delivered by pump.
I know we had patients who got Baclofen pumps placed - I think it was primarily/initially used for MS patients who would get significant muscle cramps/spasms.
People in wheel chairs as well. Anyone with. Very limited mobility.
