Baker's Cyst

Posted by charlena @charlena, Dec 30, 2019

Has anyone had a Baker's Cyst and, if so, what did you do for relief? Additionally, I have been advised that surgery is not usually recommended. Has anyone had surgery for this? If so, what was the outcome of the surgery? Thank you.

Hi @charlena My wife had them periodically. Once she did have it drained by her orthopedic doctor in the office with only a topical anesthetic. Provided solid relief for her.

How ling have you had this?

Thank you for the reply. My husband is the one with the cyst. He had back surgery in October & November & it was found when a doppler scan was done to rule out DVT. His knee is so painful & stiff that he is having a hard time walking. Did your wife's eventually go away on its own or does she have to have it drained periodically?

IIRC she had it drained two times. Over time it did go away for her, but as with so many things in health, each body is different.

My daughter was diagnosed at a young age (12 y/o) with a Baker Cyst behind her kneecap. (at 3 years old she was diagnosed with Growing Pains with the same exact symptoms... Ridiculous!) From the age of 3 she would wake up, screaming in pain because her leg hurt. It would tear my heart out! She was given Benadryl. When we found out it was a cyst we were told to give her Aleve and let her sleep. There was no conversation about surgery. The Aleve did in fact help her, as long as she had a heating pad on her knee also. She is now 27 and her knee hardly ever hurts her anymore.
