Curious: Are you the only family member with SFN?

Posted by katec @katec, Dec 13, 2019

Is there anyone out there, who has a biopsy confirmed diagnosis of SFN, who has other people in your family with it as well? I’m just wondering how common or how often the genetic form of SFN has been found in multiple family members. Thanks!

@katec, I have idiopathic small fiber PN and my cousin also has small fiber PN but we have not had any tests to determine if it's a genetic form of neuropathy.

Here is some information that discusses the genetics of small fiber neuropathy.

My brother had neuropathy, but I am 99% sure it was due to diabetes.

No-one else in my family has been diagnosed with SFN, as of yet, let alone ever heard of it! My father has diabetic neuropathy.

My father had it, though it was never diagnosed. I think that all of my five siblings have been treated for pn, apparently with better success than I. I had a bunch of tests done at Oregon Health Sciences University a year ago, and they told me that I had some genetic markers, indicating that it's our father's fault.
