Omeprazole questions

Posted by januaryjane @januaryjane, Dec 3, 2019

Ok, I went to my gastro and having symptoms of nausea that got better with an antacid. So, Im put on 40mg omeprazole a day since Nov. 9th. I had an upper scope and nothing was found, no ulcer, inflammation, notta. Im still having stomach troubles, could this medicine be making things worse? Should I even be on this higher amount? I know no one can tell me what to do, just asking around for some insight.
My symptoms are, lack of appetite, on and off diarrhea, gas, cramping, severe fatigue, low grade fever on and off. And nausea if off the medicine. Been going on for at least a few months.
I have chronic constipation from slow transit disorder, so struggling with that.

I just dont want to be taking this medicine if its exacerbating my symptoms.

Omeprazole is usually prescribed in cases of proven gastric of duodenal inflammation, possibly caused by over-production of stomach acid. The symptoms you describe can, though, be a consequence of under-production of acid and the Omeprazole could be making things worse! It seems to me that you need to be investigated for alternative diagnoses. You might like to read the book Why Stomach Acid is Good For You. by Jonathan Wright and Lane Lenard.

Which coffee is low acid? Thank you

@grachelg If you do a search for low-acid coffee on Amazon there are a few. Dark roasted is lower acid than light or regular roast too. The roasting burns off the acid.

@januaryjane That amount of omeprazole is not too much for some conditions but it sounds as if you may have something else as @eden commented. After my Barrett's Esophagus was first diagnosed I was on 40 mg of omeprazole for a short time to get things under control, and then it was reduced to 20 mg.

What kind of foods are you eating? Try a low acid diet, no soda, booze, only low acid coffee, no tomato products, Italian, mexican, fried foods. Drink water, almond milk, no fruit juices. Eat more fiber and see if that helps.

When I get bad I go on very limited diet, low fodmap, low acid, sugar etc. Now Im doing mostly liquid to calm my gut down. Nothing caffeinated or carbonated, no dairy, or juice. Water, some gaterorade, decaf tea, broth, lots of water. Jello sometimes. Today I had loud growls and gas from just drinking water. So, I dunno. Im afraid to eat, feel better when I dont.
I see my gastro tuesday. No idea what shell say as my upper scope was normal and so were the biopsies.

I’m just coming out of a 2 week acid attack. Don’t know what started it, but plenty of nausea, abdominal pain etc. Saw my GI last week and got rx for carafate to coat to the stomach. Will see how it works

@januaryjane - I am doing much better now, thank you. IBS seems to coexist with many GI problems. Stress of any kind sets it off with me.
