My daughter has Crohn’s and PSC and has to be careful what otc meds/supplements she takes. Is cod liver oil safe for her to take? Can anyone tell me their experience taking this...good or bad? Is there any medical information pertaining to this? There is a lot of stuff on the internet, but what is factual? That is why I am appealing to people that have had experience with these issues.

Hi @sandyjr, I moved your question about taking cod liver oil when you have Crohn's and PSC (primary sclerosing cholangitis) to this discussion that you previously started about taking supplements. I did this so you can continue to connect with @lisag03 @dval @guener @meggie1135 @eden @theysayimcrazy and others. I'd also like to bring in @rosemarya @svezir @rodney9999 who have experience with primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Sandy, may I ask why you are interested in cod liver oil for your daughter? What are you hoping it will do?

Hi Sandy. There has been some research to see if cod liver oil would alleviate inflammation and suppress flare-ups. No improvement was found. But, also, no adverse reactions occurred in the subjects. Cod liver oil does, however lubricate the tract and may assist the passage of faecal matter through the intestines. It may also contribute vitamins d and a, and beneficial fatty acids. In all cases of dietary changes you must consult your health professionals. And periodically search the internet for future research results on dietary control of IBD. Good luck.
