My first A1C since diagnosis 3 months ago!!

Posted by kateia @kateia, Nov 4, 2019

I just wanted to share my excitement. I had my first A1C test today since my diagnostic test in July. July's test was 10.1 Today's test was 5.8!! I was going to be happy with 8!! I can't believe it dropped so fast. No medications. Just eating right and exercising!!! Woo Hoo!! I'll keep plugging along. Still want to get 10 more pounds off before the end of the year!

@marvinjsturing I don't know how I lost control. When my feet gave out, I gradually went down hill. I had my husband put the treadmill in storage because I could hardly walk to the kitchen. I have been angry at myself for all of this. It's not like me; I've always been in control and strict with myself. I just gave up. I ignored my diet and said that if I die earlier or later, it doesn't matter. I've been trying to turn myself around and re-think the pros and cons. I finally decided to have my husband put the treadmill back in the house. I have to do it, even if only fifteen minutes a day. It helps and exercise is a key ingredient for diabetes. My numbers have been off the chart. My endocrinologist retired, so I didn't have to be accountable and quit everything. Now I feel more mad than ever for treating myself that way. I am going to start again today. I have diabetes and arthritis and neuropathy and fibromyalgia. That's too much for me because I was never a sickly person until I had to retire. I never saw it coming. But I have to take back myself and start again. Like before, if I begin today, by January 2020, I'll be ahead of all the exercise/gym people who do it a week or two because they made a resolution on New Years. My New Year starts today! Come along with me--just fifteen minutes.

@retiredteacher Hi Carol. It has taken me some time to answer you. We bought a house that is closer to the grandkids and we have been very busy getting ready for the move which we are hoping will be the first week of December. After we get settled, I can start exercising again. Right now I am getting enough exercise just getting ready for the move. Don't be too hard on yourself. We all have set backs from time to time. It's alright. We just need to refocus and get "On The Road Again!"

@marvinjsturing Good luck with your move, that's such a taxing endeavor. We want to move but really need to clear out so many years of memories. It's not easy. We had gotten a good start in the summer and then I fractured my femur so the move got put on the back burner. If I'm not getting things done, nothing gets done. So I have vowed that after the holidays I will get back to it and hopefully we will move in the spring. We won't be moving closer to our son or daughter -- he lives in Denver, she is in NYC -- but just downsizing, hopefully not too far from where we are now.
I hope all goes well with the move and that you enjoy living closer to your grandchildren. I do not yet have grandchildren to enjoy -- I am way too old to not have them too!

@marvinjsturing I can certainly understand moving and the time involved. It is not an easy job; it's hard work. I know you will enjoy being closer to family, and I hope still close to the hospital for your transplant when that news comes through. You are right about moving being exercise. Any time I get a notion to change a room around and we have heavy pieces to move, my husband and I feel it in the old bones the next day. But, it gets done. When we are all settled in again, hopefully we can all get back to exercise. With the holidays, I know I'll need it for enjoying the good food. Take care and keep in touch about your transplant.

Dorisena, Your positive attitude is wonderful!! I only wish that I can keep mine positive as long as you have!!! Yes, I'm hoping that by 65 I'm taking pictures and writing! Not a book, more a journal. I agree with you. We have to read up on everything and be very cautious as to what our choices are. I have seen so many "cures" to diabetes in the past three months that it makes your head spin. I went the less expensive route. I was blessed to find a Hy-Vee dietician that was giving free A1C tests this week. Otherwise I would have had to pay my $75.00 co-pay plus the cost of the test. We have to keep our eyes open all the time. The blood tests that the doctor took in July when I was diagnosed was almost $1,200.00 Of course I didn't find out until I got the bill. I've asked to see what the breakdown of the costs were for the tests. I can get a blood panel any time at our local hospital for $20.00. This made me very curious. I only asked for A1C, blood panel, C-reactive protein, and thyroid tests. Can't believe they would be THAT expensive. God bless your day.

That Is unethical they're taking advantage of you I know there is a transparency law in place now that president trump just signed I would look into that and challenge them And I would never pay it I would tell them to pack sand

About the blood test costs, I feel guilty if I allow the doctors to run up a bill on Medicare, as it is unfair to the taxpayers who foot the cost. I feel like a burden on society despite the fact that my husband paid double into the taxes as an employer. He didn't pay me for my work because he said we would then need to pay taxes, so he was not very educated in his thinking at times. His grandmother raised him, and he was terrible at budgeting and spending his money. That is the main reason I study on the web and I avoid going to the doctor when I can manage my aches and pains with diet and exercise. I haven't been able to keep ahead of all my chronic problems but my blood pressure is down and I am sleeping better. Now I must push the walking and balancing exercises which I have been taught to improve my balance and which will help avoid falling when I am not concentrating and in a hurry. I am working slowly these days. Dorisena

That is thrilling news! I've been able to keep my A1C under 6.6 for several years with diet (adding above ground veggies, skipping all grains including alcohol and sugar/desserts) and quit taking Metformin last July. I was told by my docs at Mayo not to quit taking it because it was the best anti-aging drug on the market. So I have gone back on Metformin. It helps with weight loss and possibly adds 7 years to your life span. They don't know why... research is still ongoing. I am switching from Truvia to Monkfruit in my coffee/tea this month and since it is less processed, thought that might be a positive switch. Just finished a great book - Eat, Fast, Feast - and that program also resolves diabetic issues with diet.
