Sulfa drug allergy

So I have been breaking out in this sandpaper like rash on and off.now for.years when I was a kid I was told I was allergic to.sulfa drugs when I was an adult I was prescribed lasix which caused a reaction I was told.it could with a sulfa drug allergy same.rash and I also cant take iron sulfate with the same.reaction and causes vomiting uncontrollably within a.couple of.hours but everywhere I look it says these allergies are.different but sulfa and.sulfate sulfanomides there has to.be some common link that makes me allergic to all 3

@corina Welcome to connect . We try to help with our experience that you may have also. I want to warn you if your allergic to sulfa don't take glucosamine for arthritis . It is from shellfish, unless you can get the vegetarian kind .

@corina Yes I was surprised also but glucosomine sulfate is derived from crabs and is high in sulfate

Hi @corina and @lioness, Sulfa, sulfites, sulfates - 3 words that are very similar but not the same can be very confusing. I had to look them up myself to remember which is what.

Sulfates are salts of sulfuric acid and are present in many medicines, supplements, and personal care products – they are not the same thing as sulfites or sulfa drugs.

@lioness, sulfa drugs are not the same as glucosamine sulfate or sulfate. The following articles help clarify:

@colleenyoung - Thank you for clarifying this. I have a sulfa drug allergy after many years of taking it. Not one Dr gave me any restrictions, as a matter of fact I had raw tuna last night for dinner. For me my pharmacist is an encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to drugs and suppliments! @corina does this help?

@colleenyoung Thanks for the clarification . I am allergic to shellfish, shrimp especially and was always told not to take glucosomine I assumed it was the sulfate so glad to know the difference . Sorry corina I learned something today also .

@corina I’m sure you’re very concerned about the rash. What has your doctor said about it?
