Thyroid's role in late onset Menopause

Posted by cwms @cwms, Oct 16, 2019

I'm 59 and still get my period. No one can figure out why. I'm told your thyroid plays a role and since my thyroid was removed when I was 31 and I've been on Synthroid/levothyroxine ever since), I was wondering if anyone else has the same issue.

I don't really know about this since I had my ruined uterus removed at the age of 35 to keep from bleeding to death. I do know that you must be producing estrogen nicely because it slows down in menopause and after. Do you take any estrogen product? My neighbor was given estrogen for her health issues late in life and resumed periods which was not good but they were working on her osteoporosis. Do you smoke? This lady did. Her husband was a doctor and tried many strategies to lengthen her life. She was miserable, actually, when I visited her. The medical world doesn't have it all figured out yet, so you are smart to question your body's natural decline. How do you feel? Estrogen helps you sleep better and it keeps wrinkles away. That's all I know. Dorisena

Hi Dorisena- Yes, I am producing estrogen, although it fluctuated wildly, so they put my on low dose birth control pills about 2 months ago. I think I needed the progesterone to counteract the estrogen to prevent uterine cancer. When I would get my period it was VERY heavy on day 2 and 3 and then tapered off, lasting a total of 6 days. I don't smoke, exercise, eat healthy (except for too much wine) and I feel great! I just had a bone density done and it went up! I have no trouble sleeping and my skin has very few wrinkles. It's like I'm a female version of Benjamin Button! Ok, that may be a slight exaggeration, but you get the idea. I guess I should be happy, but somehow I feel like this will all come at a price, like cancer. I'm just trying to educate myself to prevent that. Someone out there must know something!

I must confess I don't know the name Benjamin Button. Oh, well, it sounds like the birth control pills should regulate things a little better and I am happy about your bone density. You wouldn't want to have a baby at sixty, I don't think. I was put on estrogen and progesterone some years ago but I couldn't stand the progesterone so they changed it to just estrogen for ten years. Then the research came out that it was not good to be on the estrogen so they took me off abruptly and I was a mess for a month. Since I lost my uterus at 35 I can't tell you much, but then neither could the doctors at that time. Maybe in another month or so things will settle down. Even though I have survived cancer twice I don't think about cancer because I eat an excellent diet with many anti-cancer foods recommended and only worry about not getting enough exercise. And my stressful life is gone, so that is a plus. Keep asking questions. Dorisena
