Hi,

We have more of what they call noseeums in this area because they bite, they itch and you can’t see them. We actually have noseeum screens on the patio so they can’t get in and a noseeum spray around the rooftops of both houses. They are prevalent in the cooler part of the year in early morning and as the sun goes down. Always have to turn the spray on if having an outdoor party. Not every area has them but we are near the water. Man..you can’t even stand outside in the evening and talk to your neighbors. Mosquitoes are really not a problem here. We get sprayed on a regular basis but that’s mainly for the palmetto bugs (aka roaches)which are our national treasure lol. In my subdivision we have deer, bobcats, possums, large turtles and beautiful cranes, a variety of snakes.

First time I saw a bobcat I was out walking and was wondering what kind of dog it was. I had a big turtle dig under my kitchen window and after that had termites on my kitchen windowsill so we all got treated for that. And another time the biggest turtle was blocking my front door. I must have scared it because he shit all over the place...good lord the stink. You have to check the driveway before backing out. I bumped a turtle once...no harm though. When I first moved in there was an enormous spider inside by my front door. I yelled for my son in law to kill it. It was pregnant! When he slammed it out came a gazillion baby spiders. Tried to kill a hard shelled gigantic beetle with my shoe. Had to get a brick and pounded it into the gravel....could still see movement under the gravel after I hit it. I was muttering die damnit die!

So there are 3 homes for sale in my subdivision...anyone interested? Gotta love squirrels and little lizards (they’re so cute). You can be close to nature. BTW I used the Avon Skin so soft in Long Island for mosquitos...worked great then but relied on OFF or just plain alcohol. I use lots of soap and water and Benadryl gel rubbed all over so you can stick to your sheets when you go to bed at night. And try not to scratch.

Come on down to Florida where our motto is “CLOSE THE DOOR!”........Hurricane Mary

@imallears - you have the credentials to be a regular wildlife expert! It hurt me to read about that spider that broke open into 1000 spiders. I ran from the computer screaming when I read it and had to make myself a strong cocktail to come back and finish the post. LOL. Anyway, we have noseeums too, and we have your motto too - Close the Door.
