Ideas for pain relief from Small Fiber Neuropathy (SFN)

@terryrose

My diagnosis is peripheral neuropathy. I have numb feet and numbness on one leg up to the knee. But at the same time the feet are so sensitive that I can't wear socks, even though the compression socks might work. Reason is that one small wrinkle feels like I'm on a rock or nail, etc.
Hoping some cure can be found.

Hello @terryrose, Welcome to Connect. I have peripheral neuropathy. My diagnosis is idiopathic small fiber PN and I've had it for over 20 years but only bothered to get a diagnosis a few years ago. I only have numbness with my neuropathy. I'm sorry to hear about the pain with yours. There really is no cure for neuropathy but there are a lot of different treatments and therapies that can help relieve some of the worse symptoms and pain. I'm hoping other members will share their experience with you and you can learn what has helped them. I posted my story earlier on Connect with what I've found that has helped me here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/anyone-here-dealing-with-peripheral-neuropathy/?pg=42#comment-65985

You might be find the following discussions helpful in your search for something to help with the sensitivity in your feet.

Are you able to share what current treatment you are using?

I had the same problem....just the fabric of my socks was painful. I had to cut the top bands just so I could wear them! The DMSO helps numb that pain, and then I could wear the compression socks....it keeps the swelling away from your feet which I think helps with the pain. The cream is sold on Amazon, and I bought a 6 pack of over-the-calf socks from there also, then cut them a few inches above the ankle so there would be no band at the top. Hope this helps!

Hi, @terryrose - I am also interested, like @johnbishop, in what treatment you have undergone for your peripheral neuropathy and what you may have found helps?

The DMSO cream helped the burning/pain in my feet. I had to cut the elastic around the top of my socks to even be able to wear them! I use the cream after my shower in the morning and it really helps with the sensitivity.

Have you heard of complex regional pain syndrome - CRPS? I have CRPS in both feet as well as SFN. Just a thought. See pain management frequently. Just had RFAs done in top of both feet. Looking for relief as well as looking forward to nerve to soles being injected. Spine is fairly well destroyed with arthritis and DDD. Don't think Dorsal Ganglion root can be done. Perhaps using my stimulator may be a way but am not sure I want any more surgery that CRPS can invade!

Hi, @terryrose - since you can't wear socks or you get the feeling of a rock or nail with one wrinkle, what do you usually wear on your feet?
