Statin discontinued due to neuropathy. What are some alternatives?

Posted by Nazir Khan @nukhan, Jan 19, 2020

I have been using Lipitor since 2007 for lowering my cholesterol which is on the list of those medicines that are suspected to cause neuropathy. I am thinking of discontinuing this menace but before doing so want to check with those members who have discontinued using statin and what is their experience. What alternative methods have they since adopted for lowering their cholesterol .. diet, alternative medication, exercise or anything else ?

Hi, @kazz30 - when you say your statin prescriptions were unsuccessful, do you mean at lowering your LDL? Have you experienced any side effects with the red yeast rice capsules?

I’m allergic to all statins and I have high cholesterol and high triglycerides. I’ve gotten them all down to normal with my diet. I basically follow the all American diet-balanced. And the easiest way that I do that is a do a quarter of a plate with fruit, quarter plate of meat and a half of a plate of greens. My salad i use the Italian vinegar instead of salad dressing. Basically just eliminate all sugar and all cars from your diet I will see what your numbers do! No sodas or juices.- water water

I have been taking cholesterol medication for the last 20 odd years and a year ago I was diagnosed with PN... burning, numb, painful lower legs and feet... no doctor or neurologist seems able to help me so I have decided to make peace with the fact that my condition cannot be cured. Can anyone tell me if there is any natural cholesterol medication I can use in stead of the chemical one that contains the harmful statins? Will it improve my condition if I stopped taking the chemical cholesterol medicine?

I QUIT STATINS, heard they cause the pain and took them for decades, just watch my diet without them. I do not know what my CHOLESTERAL IS NOW.
NO STATINS NO GLUCOPHAGE JUST MY INSULIN AND THE GABAPENTIN AND THE METANX...so far some of the pain is gone. Will see an MRI on FRIDAY to see if it is in my spine. M.

The last day I took ANY Statin drug was October 15, 2018. After extensive on-line research I came up with Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and still take one tablespoon in 8 ounces of cold water every morning BEFORE breakfast. Look it up. Everyone is different but it seems to work for me because in every checkup in the last year and a half my LDL, etc. has been within normal perimeters. There are too many doctors today that are just interested in writing prescriptions and moving on to their next patent during their 15 minute insurance allotted office visit!

Hi Lisa, Various Statin drugs were prescribed after a non-heart attack ( 2007 ) but an 85 % blockage required 2 stents in the LCA.
