Anyone ever been diagnosed by a dentist for root reabsoption?

Hi,

Didn’t know where to start this thread but has anyone ever been diagnosed by a dentist for root reabsorption?
Apparently it should be taken care of ASAP by either root canal or extraction.

Thank for any info

Hi,
It’s been a month since I found out about my tooth reabsorption and I came across 2 people in my gym class who had this years ago. So last week I had xrays, 3D scan and a root canal. I got to this early and one root was involved and in a good position on the cheek side, I think she said. She removed the pulp and put a temp filling and I returned this past Tuesday for the apioectomy.
She drilled a hole in the gum and cut off the bottom of the root and sealed it all up and put in 4 stitches which are being removed this Thursday...2 days...wow. I have to say both procedures were not as bad as I had anticipated.

I rested and iced every 15 minutes ( for 9 hours yesterday)....drank cold liquids and cold food. Had to sleep with head elevated.
No brushing. So I binged on Netflix and Amazon and babied myself. Today is warm soft food, not hot, and rinsing with salt water as often as possible. I have minimal swelling and no pain...just a minor sinus type headache this morning. Also no gym for rest of week and no wine (boo). It pays to heed instructions. Expensive , almost 3 grand total and I return to my regular dentist for a permanent filling soon.

So don’t ignore any type of pain or discomfort with your teeth..there’s a reason for the pain. Infection can occur and you could lose the tooth and it’s too near my sinus cavities, eyes and ears to ignore. My regular dentist caught it on my yearly xrays but, not being an endodontist, didn’t know what would or could be done.

So I can enjoy my granddaughters high school graduation weekend without looking like a chipmonk lol.

Hello @imallears

I appreciate your update and the results of your treatment. I'm glad that you have not had a lot of discomfort. It sounds like you handled it well. (I agree that Netflix and Amazon can be great distractors when we don't feel well.) Probably the most discomfort was caused by the cost. Did you need to take any antibiotics after the procedure?

I know you will keep following the doctor's instructions. I hope you have a lovely weekend with your family at your granddaughter's high school graduation!

Hi,
Thank you....no antibiotics...had the stitches out this morning....everything looks good. That area still sore with some slight swelling but I can eat normal food....and have that glass of wine with dinner tonight! I’ll still be careful, though, until the tenderness goes away. We do things in a big way in my family so it’s a combo graduation and 21st celebration birthday for my oldest grandson. Can return to the gym next week. Glad I didn’t let this go.

Hello @imallears,

I'm glad for your post. I've learned a lot about a dental problem that I was not aware of and I'm sure others have as well. I'm pleased that your stitch removal went well and that you are still feeling good.

I do encourage you to take it easy for a while. I look forward to hearing from you again~

@lioness I usually use the grape tomatoes. Sometimes I slice them but not always. Personal preference I suppose.

I am a healthy 70+. Always have taken good care of dental, because I have some periodontal issues. Have always had good quality (and costly) dental professionals. 3 yrs. ago I had a 3-tooth bridge on upper right (teeth 13, 14, 15). As an experiment, I had it done by a highly-regarded University dental clinic in NYC to save money. It was a disaster. I fought them for 6 months and got my $3K back. Then I returned to my expensive prosthodontist of 10 years - who I think does good work (but he is breaking the bank $$$) and he, perhaps, over treats out of over-caution. Well, now I need a root canal in #13 due to slight crack caused either by NYC Dental Clinic or by him in the past of by nature? I have ABSOLUTELY NO PAIN OR DISCOMFORT, but I discovered it myself as I could feel a bit of "sponginess" inside my cheek.
So he took Xrays and now wants his associate to do a CAT SCAN. I object. First, too many Xrays in general. Second CT Scan is more damaging than Xrays. Third - I am running out of money! He gave up in frustration and i gave up in disgust several months ago.

However, everyone says I have to get it fixed. Abscess can be threatening, I have 2 TKR's and cannot get infections. Abscess is an infection (!)
And there is all this talk about abscess spreading to brain, eye etc.,etc. Again, I feel NO DISCOMFORT. I would like to go to another dentist/prosthodontist, endodontist but I guess it makes no sense. He did the bridge and I hope feels responsible for keeping it healthy (which he probably does). If the root canal is done by his associate, he is still in the line of responsibility. So I suppose I have to go back (even though he says he has gone above and beyond and can do no more based on my rejection of root canal and Cat Scan). I AM HOPING IF HE AND I AGREE TO CONTINUE THAT I CAN AT LEAST REJECT THE CAT SCAN. In a dilemma.............

Hi @tennisgolf - It sounds as if you have had a frustrating and, at times, discouraging quest to maintain your dental health. I feel for you and I know how expensive the treatments can be. I'm in FL and can only imagine the prices in NYC! I had two TKR's so I can also relate to the importance of not getting any infections started. Of course, none of us here can give medical advice, but if it were me, I would follow the dentist's advice for both the root canal and the CT scan if he will take you back. I would not want to take a chance with infection even if there is no pain or discomfort and I truly wouldn't worry about exposure to the small amount of additional radiation with the CT scan. If the issue is primarily financial, would the office be amenable to working out some kind of payment plan?
