Getting both knees done...

Posted by amytro @amytro, Mar 27, 2019

Hello fellow brave people. I had my first TKR 7 weeks ago and am having the second one done in 6 weeks. Right now, I am still using the cane, am not able to get upstairs foot over foot yet, and I still am building stamina (trying to get to the end of the street and back without being wiped out for the rest of the day!). Has anyone else had both knees done in a short period of time like this? Would you expect that another 6 weeks will leaving me healed enough to be my main support once the other knee is done? Doctors and PT people are reluctant to answer this question-- and I understand that it does depend on the person-- but I am looking for other people's stories. Thank you!!

I am 9 weeks PO and couldn’t imagine getting my other knee done even this year! I had to work hard to get to 110/0 ( I havent been measured in a week so there may be improvement), am still walking with a cane, feel like my surgery knee is made of wood, and I have months of work ahead of me. So, in my case, getting my other knee replaced in 6 weeks would not work for me. But some people have relatively easy recovery’s and if you’re one of them, it would work. You can’t really know for sure until you get your first surgery. That’s my opinion for what it’s worth.

Good Morning. You are a very brave soul. I am 9 weeks post op this week. Walking fine, 2-2.5 miles a day. Have my last PT on Friday. ROM 120 yesterday. Still have pain, but with no rhyme or reason. Still have to force myself to go down and up stairs correctly, but it's coming. Would I be having my second knee done this close to my first.....I can only say, NO WAY! I want the first to be solid and strong and I want my body to be pain free, which might take some time, as I am told. Just my opinion.....may I ask your age? I'm 72.

Thanks, Emb123 and dkapustin. I am 62, just about to turn 63 this week! My flexion has been at 120 since week 4, and extension has been 0 for a while too. I am doing quite well in the house and living alone, I consider that an accomplishment! I've been driving since week 4 also. My "good" knee is NOT so good given that it's worked so hard for the surgery knee lately. I just want them both done and over with so I can get on with my life! Since all the equipment is out, the deductible has been met, and I'm afraid I'll chicken out if I wait...., I'm going to do it now. It is a tough surgery. I'm not sure I was clear that the recovery was going to be like this!

I am 9 weeks PO too and can barely walk through Publix and Earthfare. I am still on cane because my leg feels like a wooden peg and I can't seem to get my gait back. Don't mean to hijack the post but any tips on how to get your gait back and walk better? My PT just has me walk around the room and reminds me to bend my knee in an unnatural way. Did you have a good gait immediately? I'm so confused about not having the ability to walk normally.

My gait wasn’t bad but walking in stores is hard- those floors! I walk as much as I can without the cane. I try to remember heel-toe-heel-toe when I walk. Just walk like nothing happened- or mentally picture that if you can. Try not to “favor” it. That’s my best advice. It will come back with time. Don’t think about it if you can. Good luck!!!

I am 11 weeks out from bilateral (double)TKR . Yep! I did them both at the same time. I was told initially that the first few weeks are tough and at 4 weeks the recovery would be much like having one done. I've had my ups and downs these past months, hardly any energy to do what I want. Still working on walking "naturally" and there is still pain and that tight band feeling. Everyone is different, you need to listen to your body, not what others tell you where you should be. I'm learning to be patient with my recovery. I thought I should be so much better at this time since I'm 62, good health and weight plus I prepared for 2 months before surgery, went above and beyond with PT at home and at the clinic. Just met with my surgeon and he said to actually back off the PT because I'M keeping them inflamed and they need to heal. He said my PASSIVE numbers reflect a good bend at 125 R 122 L and 0 on extension. My ACTIVE #'s are lower and not to worry. I wish you the best, I also thought to get it done so I could get on with my active life. I know this will all be better in a year and I hope to be chasing my grand kids all over the place!

My mom had both knees done at the same time. Sounds like that's pretty unusual.

@dkapustin My gait was not good immediately, but I think it's pretty good now. I asked my husband that question last night, if I was walking normally or limping or anything and he said no. Of course, maybe he was just trying to make me feel better, but I do not feel like I am limping or anything.
