Does anyone find that a type of shoe helps your foot neuropathy?

@lorirenee1 I am way out of my league with neuropathy. I have only had it for two months. Some days it isn't as bad. I have some research to do to figure out what all it involves. I know diabetics can get neuropathy, but I never had it until I got up one morning and my feet were horrible. I am not familiar with PEA, but I will research that. I do not take any meds for my Diabetes, I already have enough for my thyroid, gastro problems, and blood pressure. I am trying very hard not to take anything for Diabetes, and my endo agrees as long as I control with diet and exercise. Of course, since my feet are so painful, I am not able to exercise. I was walking on my treadmill daily. I'll check on PEA and hope when I get my Spencos that I can get back to the treadmill. You are right: Everything to do with Diabetes is very hard to deal with, but with help, it can be managed.

Your neuropathy symptoms are directly related to your diabetes and sugar intake. If you control your carbs very closely, eat little of them, your feet symptoms will probably lessen naturally. Diabetes is the number one cause of neuropathy. Control sugar, and you will control neuropathy. I am not diabetic. My neuro doc is still trying to figure out why I have it. I had a lumpectomy a year ago, and within 3 weeks after surgery, it started. All of this is not much fun, that is for sure. By the way, to change to a happy topic...I saw you taught English lit. I taught English as a Second Language, but I belong to a book club and like reading a lot. However, I do read in spurts. The ladies in my book club have been meeting for at least 20 years. We are all retired teachers and aides, and we spend more time chatting than discussing books. We are so bad!!!! We love eachother a lot, needless to say! Anyway, good luck with those feet. Do you mean "Spenco" inserts? If you do, I think they would be just fine for your shoes. I do not know if they would fit all of your shoes, however. But I do know that the Spenco inserts are comfortable, and help with PN. Lori Renee

@lorirenee1 @retiredteacher, Hi Ladies, just wanted to chime in here regarding neuropathy and shoes, my least favorite subjects 😉 Lori, I so much loved everything about the Spenco mule but they just did not work for these picky feet of mine so sending them back. I have ordered and sent back so many shoes I feel like a crazy person! I went to a shoe store called Foot Solutions here in San Diego and met with a Pedorthist. They made custom orthotics and I just got them. I am wearing them for an hour the first day and try to increase the time each day. I will most likely need to go back in a few days to have them adjusted which is quite common. They are already digging into my high arches, ow. I don’t have any numbness in my feet so I feel everything!! My husband does not have neuropathy but he swears by his custom made othotics that he wears in all of his shoes! He is a lucky one!

Carol, I hope so much that the Spencos work for you!!! But I have decided that I really have to try everything on from a specialty shoe store. At least if they don’t work you can take them back if worn only in the house. I don’t know if they have Foot Solutions stores nationwide but might be something to think about. They have a lot of mule style of shoe but the Pedorthist said I need a more supportive shoe which the SAS sneaker shoe I am wearing is not. But he doesn’t want to sell me anything new until I get used to the orthotic which I appreciated. I would be so happy if I can do my walking again!!! Keeping my fingers and toes crossed!!!

@lauraj155 I guess I'm on the same quest many people are on. I remember the good old days when I could wear spike heels and flats and tennis shoes, and fancy expensive shoes all the way to going barefoot. Now, it's the bane of my existence to try to figure out what my feet will tolerate. I am thankful to @lorirenee1 for getting me started with the Spencos. When they come, if they don't work, I'll be trying something else. My Birks (over 100 pairs) are the only shoes I have so I am starting all over. I am not going to wear shoes that cost a fortune, even if my feet hurt so bad that I can't walk. I am going to have to settle on something in the affordable range. This is the most awful shopping I have ever done, and I have always been a shopaholic!
I'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for your info on Foot Solutions.

@lauraj155 @retiredteacher Hi Ladies, First; Laura, I can't believe how fast you received the Spencos! Sorry they did not work! My problem with buying a custom orthotic, is that one day a shoe that feels good, may not feel as good the next day. The following day, the same shoe, may feel excellent. This is due to really wacky nerves. My nerves in my feet are so very screwed up that there is no telling what will happen. But Laura; I hope each hour in the orthotic gets better and better. Is there a better and better with neuropathy? Let's all get severely drunk and call the whole thing off?????? Now Carol; first thing I need to do with you is apologize. I felt really bad leaving you a message to watch your carbs and sugar as if you do not know that. I am sorry. I have this mothering quality in me that wants to take care of everyone, and I am sure you know to watch your sugar. Now that I said that, I hope that the Spencos work better for you. Today they felt good for me. Last nite, they felt kind of gritty. I could just die with this neuropathy, which leads me to my next post on the neuropathy site.....let's all find a way to cope???????? I think about handsome movie stars sometimes....that doesn't last too long, though...….like I love Tim Roth, an English Actor, who isn't really handsome, but he's got somethin'...….ya know??????

@lorirenee1 No apology necessary. I know about Diabetes from my experience, but neuropathy is new to me. I'm researching and learning, though. I agree. We should find a way to cope. It's bad enough to have to give up yummy foods for bland dishes, but to have this foot problem just adds insult to injury. I remind myself that there are others in Connect that have more problems than I do. and I hope and pray that they will feel better.
My husband has been sick with a "no name" illness. It's been going on most all of March and continues into April. We've made an ambulance trip to the ER and spent seven hours as they ran tests. They eliminated problems: anything with heart is okay; no pneumonia; no flu, but lung/bronchitis/deep cough problems. He's been on antibiotics, steroids and other meds for 20 days. The doctors say this crud lasts 5 to 6 weeks! So the stress has taken its toll on me.
I know eventually this will pass, but right now it is difficult.
Good to hear from you. Sorry Laura's shoes didn't work. I hope mine do. Just have to wait and see.

Carol, I hope your husband is better soon! That is a long time to be sick! That respiratory illness can last a long time! It is very good his illness has not settled into pneumonia. Hopefully, the crud will be out of his system very soon. Meanwhile, plenty of hot tea, honey, and chicken soup. God willing, his illness is going in the right direction. @retiredteacher @lorirenee1 , Carol, I hope your husband is doing better. My husband is just getting over the flu after a week or so. Thankfully I didn’t get it and hopefully you didn’t either! The doctor’s told us the flu is late this year and it’s involving a lot of upper respiratory problems. Also, I don’t know how old any of your are but if you have diabetic neuropathy Medicare will pay 80% for a pair of shoes. I found a list of shoes for diabetes on Zappos that are Medicare approved. All of these shoes are so expensive but with the 80% off that could really help. I don’t have diabetes and not 65 quite yet but it still is good to see all the types of shoes. Lori, my son and I share amazon prime so I get two day shipping which is so helpful! Laura

@lauraj @retiredteacher Carol, I really hope your husband's health is going in the right direction. Laura, it sounds like your husband is almost normal. Mine has had a bad cold all week, and is still recovering. So much sickness. Anyway, although I am 67, I am not on Medicare except for Part A, because I get health insurance through my husband's work. His company pays our health premiums. Not heard of in these days! And for me, as far as getting shoes for diabetic neuropathy, I don't have neuropathy due to diabetis. One year ago, I had a lumpectomy, and shortly after surgery I developed neuropathy. I had radiation during the surgery. Perhaps that is what caused the neuropathy. I really have no idea. But Carol, for you, getting 80% off on high end shoes, if you use Medicare may be very helpful. I just bid on new Wolky shoes on Ebay and got a gorgeous pair for $22.00 dollars. I always wonder when people get rid of shoes that inexpensively if they stole them....I hope not!!!! YEESH!!!! Anyway, hang in with your feet, ladies. Mine were impossible this morning. Better now. Go figure. I give up. Bye for now. Lori Renee
