@bookysue when we were first talking I had the phone turned away so I could at least comb my hair so it’s not a case of lip reading.
I asked my husband why FaceTime might be clearer and he theorized that perhaps FaceTime uses the internet whereas regular calls are on regular phone lines. Just a theory though. @johnbishop do have any thoughts on this?

@contentandwell and @bookysue, I think the video/audio quality depends on multiple things - using cellular data vs Wi-Fi, speed of your Internet connection/service, any interference and settings for the app you are using. Here's some info that may be helpful.
