The puppy is 3 months now. We have a fenced back yard but there are lots of gaps in the fence; I suppose we could build a dog run of sorts. The thought was that my stepson would come home from lunch and give her a break, but it still seems like a lot of time locked up.

The dog is a mini golden doodle by the way.

Ok. Remember to finish all the shots and don't take it out to public places until finished. There may be possibilities here. You have a tiled kitchen or service porch area that could be gated off? Confining to an area like that often works if it is puppy proofed. I would often have a number of dogs here. I do have a double-fenced yard. I also have a service porch/laundry room. We built about a 12 X 12, fenced pen in the yard against the side of the house, against the outside wall of my service porch. We put a doggie door in the wall. I put a gate across the doorway tgat went from the laundry room into the kitchen. That way, the dogs were in safe areas and could go in and out. Had that set up for years. I now only have two small breed rescues and have taken that pen down but the doggie door is still in and they use it. Everyone may want us to take this discussion to private. LOL! Start crate training the pup. Start some obedience training. Attention span is very short but start with "Sit" and reward. You can also teach her she has to sit before she is given her food bowl. Like most of us, dogs do better with structure and routine. I love puppies. ❤️ Want a Chihuahua mix? I am an idiot. 😬

Hello @alanism, the advice I got from the vet was that if a puppy is 3 months old, it is safe to leave the puppy in a crate for 3 hours. 4 hours for a 4 month old, and so on. Enjoy that puppy!!!
