Smelling cancer!

After the first lumpectomy, I told my oncologist about that and he had said that in all his years he had heard of 3 patients that their dogs alerted them to this, but I was the first person! I'll be seeing him after radiation and shall also be seeing an organization (TheSecondOpinion) who are a group of specialists that me meet with accepted patients after reviewing their medical records. I've always had a sensitive snifter, in fact smelled electrical wires arcing in wall when no one knew that and could smell a gas leak for over a year where the plumber came out twice in the year and finally found a hairline crack in the gas line under the house. Strange, but true!

trixie1313 - I have a pretty good nose myself (but nothing like yours!)......I have always had really terrible eyesight and attribute my bloodhound tendencies to be an over compensation. Sounds like you could be on to something and I believe we have to know our own bodies and give all of that information to our doctors so they can help. Also, prompted by your message I fiddled around on the internet a bit and dogs can often smell cancer (and other diseases and conditions) and so can some people! Good idea to trust your instincts.........always!!

I have almost no sense of smell, yet over the years I've had such a strong horrible smell from a few people that it almost made me sick. No one else could smell it and they had good sense of smell. Within a few months it was determined that those people all had cancer. Your comment about the gas leak triggered a memory as well. Once I could smell gas clear across the house from a closed garage. I called the gas company the next morning and they indicated I couldn't possibly have smelled it but sent someone to check it out. They couldn't find anything until they were about ready to leave and discovered a very small leak near the hot water heater. They still maintained that there was no way I could have smelled it.

Now I can hardly get near my 88 year old husband as the smell is so bad! He has Stage 3 Kidney (CKD), which can smell like urine but normally only in later stages. Nobody else in the family notices it. Even as a kid I couldn't pick up on odors - unless it was a skunk and I would comment on that but it never smelt as bad to me as to everyone else!

I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer was into lymph nodes, had double mastectomy, chemo radiation had very strong underarm odour, had to get special deoderant went away after treatment, i have very sensitive nose as well, noticed it start to come back again so found your experience online. i am now 1 1/2 years post treatment concerned its coming back thought i was imagining things but those around me noticed the odour too. not sure of connection

I too have smelled this type of ammonia smell as well. I smelled it when both my parents had cancer and now I'm concerned for myself. I have been smelling this odor again on myself now for a couple months. I've expressed this to my doctors and they just shrug it off like it's impossible. I do believe
there is something to it .
