Xifaxan

I took Xifaxan for IBS. Insurance didn’t cover it at all and it cost $500+ for a two week supply. Did nothing for me.

I love Xifaxan. Over the years it has helped tremendously. I would use it a couple of times a year when things got pretty bad. There were times when it didn’t fully treat the infection. With current pricing I just can’t afford it. Don’t understand why the price skyrocketed. Maybe because people liked it. I have also been on other antibiotics- but they tend to knock out good bacteria. I’m looking into buying from Canada.

@drpepper I’ve been taking Xifaxan for just over a year and a half. It’s something my insurance will not cover without an accompanying Lactulose prescription. My hepatologist says it works better than lactulose, but hey it’s so expensive I’m happy to take the lactulose too.

Can I ask what you are being treated for? Have you taken the Xifaxan continuously for the year and a half? I wondered because the course of use as a treatment treatment for IBS is two weeks. I think it can be repeated if symptoms return.

@jackiem95 I’m taking Xifaxan to prevent hepatic encephalopathy, a side effect of advanced liver disease. It helps prevent the buildup of ammonia in my brain.
