Prostatectomy soon: Any suggestions for being prepared?
Greetings. I recently learned of my prostate cancer and am scheduled for prostatectomy in January. Would appreciate feedback from others who have gone thru process. Any suggestions for being prepared? Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I appreciate the input.
I had my surgery done in September 2018 at Mayo Rochester MN. The surgery was very easy to get through. A one night stay and on my way home. I have just had a PSA test done 23 weeks after the surgery it is currently 0.05. Going into surgery my PSA was 12.9 and gleason 8.
I had my rarp done Aug 1,2019. Incontinence wasn’t too bad. I’m curious what kind of penile therapy did you do for your Ed. I am currently using a pump and cialis/viagra. I recently asked to get injections so that appt is coming up soon. Currently I can achieve a 25% erection.
I use prostaglandin from a compounding pharmacy in NJ and was recommended by a guy with colostomy and urostomy. Very reasonable with $79 for 10 doses of injections with mail order with prescription. I have used caverject before and works good but is $70 or more per dose which is expensive. Both have good results with an erection which stays up for about 90-120 minutes for me. Erections are not as big as before. Never used a pump and cialis/viagra had limited tempory success for me so moved thru that phase fairly quickly. been on the injections for 6+ years. no side effects. It is a sensitive area to put a needle so need to do it correctly in correct spot.
Hello jogger1 I had mine done last month my psa was high luckily the bone scan showed it did not spread get another opinion my other problem was urine retention I'm 57 and good luck
Thanks for the feedback
hello everyone i have a question for the group. i had my prostate removed in october, and i feel like i,m thinking about sex less and less. not to mention being unable to get an erection. but that was a problem before the surgery. has anyone else had this problem? thanks in advance
Hi @john57, I strongly encourage you to start a new discussion about lack of sex drive. It is a common side effect with treatment of prostate cancer. Several members have talked about in various discussions in the group and it would be great to bring everyone into one thread on the topic. Here's how to start a new discussion:
1. Go to the Prostate Cancer group homepage https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/prostate-cancer/
2. Click START A DISCUSSION
3. Enter a title. Be specific, for example: "Prostate Cancer and Sex: Let's talk about the changes" or something in your own words.
4. Write your message.
5. Click CREATE DISCUSSION.
