just picking up thread of this conversation. have to have epidural for hip replacement in january. is this same kind of nerve block you are discussing? i am scared about having it done.

R they giving it to u before surgery or the day of ,I don't kn what it's like yet as I'm dew for one one the 13 no surgery, but they gave me one before they took me into surgery and wasn't under sedation I saw the needle and it was long and I have sever anxiety and I said I hope ur sedating me before u do that they said no I said yes u r ,so they did and had full muscle tear,rotor cuff surgery very painful, woke up arm still numb Dr said be numb 24 hours no pain at this point and said make sure take meds even if u don't feel pain I didn't so wen it wore off I was screaming it was worse pain ever that said if it's when surgery done take pain meds trust me ,I'm need to kn about a cesi block

I really don't have a definitive answer for you. There are so many medications used.
However, if I were to guess, I'd think it is probably something like is used when you have a baby and need a C-section.
I don't know specifically what frightens you. Is it the shot or hip replacement?
As I remember, after the initial prick of the needle, some sort of IV is used so that doctors can re-administer medication as needed without having to inject again.
Please know that I am NOT in the medical field in any way.
