Foot neuropathy (numbness and pain) after total knee replacement (TKR)
I had a right total knee replacement 10 weeks ago and came out of surgery with numbness and intermittent pain on the bottom of my right foot. However, I do have good motor function in that foot. The knee has been healing and with PT, movement is on track, but the foot is a major challenge. The foot pain at times is worse than any from the knee. I have been able to generally manage the foot pain with gabapentin. My surgeon believes this may resolve in time but may take from 6-12 months. However there is a possibility that it will never go away. Has anyone else experienced foot neuropathy following knee replacement? If so, what was your experience with it?

@kenbahler2004 The doctor is in Boston, but I am not sure of his name. I think he was at New England Baptist Hospital. My orthopedic surgeon, who is wonderful, is Dr. Wolfgang Fitz at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, which is now partners with Mass General. I don't know if he does revisions though. We had a very active member who also had a revision in Boston. I will try to remember her name so I can flag her and she can tell you who she used.

I have a general question, after my TKR (when I woke up) I felt little pins and needles in the toes, not much and NOTHING else, after approx. 8 TO 12 HOURS, the bottom of my foot had numbness (approx. 50%, heel area mostly) my bandage was VERY SUPER tight, my leg became black and blue, I was told the bandage was to remain for three days. Question: Could bandage OVER compression cause foot numbness after TKR? I ask because, why did it take 12 hours for the bottom of foot to get numb? If the surgeon damaged a nerve during the operation wouldn't the heel numbness start immediately? The foot has been the same numbness as it was after 12 hours for a year now.
Anybody else have the VERY tight bandage and numb foot HOURS and HOURS AFTER the surgery? And more important, did it ever get better? I will resist ever having TKR on the other knee with every fiber in my body!
<p>I have primarily lower left leg Peripheral Neuropathy, pretty steady requiring me to take (2) 100 mg Gabapentin to sleep at nights and (1) during the day. With all I read, Neuropathy usually begins after TKR. I had a meniscus tear in my left knee (7) years ago and the last (3) years I have been having EUFLEXXA (3) injection procedure annually with moderate success.<br />First of all, I have been having the Neuropathy experience since last year in Green Valley, March, and I'm a big bone guy weighing around (250) pounds, because of family hereditary history, but I work out (2) to (3) times a week and play tennis very regularly.<br />My PCP diagnose this disease and now visiting a Neurologist to find out how to get rid of it, numerous blood draws and studies EMG, etc in Ohio and Arizona.<br />I want to know, if I have my left knee TKR, will the Neuropathy go away for good? I'm seeing a Neurologist in Tucson, but considering a second opinion at Phoenix/Scottsdale Mayo Clinic. Is this a wise thing to do and if so, which doctor(s) should I see? Should I see a Neurologist or Orthopedic Doctor? Please provide names and your recommendations.</p>

I can see you are looking to connect with other members who have experience with both neuropathy and TKR so I have moved your post to this existing conversation I know you have posted in previously. I did this so you could continue your discussion on this topic with members who have experience in both TKR and neuropathy so they can offer their experience with regard to your question pre-TKR as a point of reference.
Have you seen the Neurologist in Tucson already/recently? If so, what was his/her thoughts with regard to your neuropathy post-TKR?

Question: Anyone else have their leg turn purple like this and end up with a numb foot? Picture taken two days after operation, same day bandage removed.
@navyqas, that doesn't look good. Have you contacted your doctor about this?
The picture is one year old, taken three days after the TKR, and yes I went back to the surgeon one week later because the bottom of the foot was numb. He made like everything was fine and the numb foot would take a very long time to go away. A year later foot bottom still numb. Went to a specialist six months ago about the numb foot, he said AVERAGE time for the numb foot nerve damage to correct was 13 months, or it could take 10 years or never correct.
My question was, was my foot numbness caused by a bandage so tight it damaged a nerve in three days? Can that happen? did anyone one else have the SAME problem?
