Bone on bone thumbs

@hensy Since 2008 Ive gotten my thumbs injected Surgery is the last thing I will do I use a thumb splint at night also Dr perscribed Volteran cream Ice also is anti inflammatory

I’m not sure the injection has really helped. It’s eased the pain slightly that’s all. My thumb appears a bit disfigured and I’m having probs opening jars, taking lids off things etc. - the gripping action is weaker than previously.

@hensy When my thumb looked disjointed and painful the other day I used Voltaran cream and wore my thumb brace all day it felt better by night As far as opening jars a friend gave me a jar opener its great google it Its a stand put jar in turn it on the machinery opens jar its great .

Seems older posts have disappeared so I'll update my story. I had CMC surgery on right thumb in late October, 2018. I chose the Stablyx implant. I've had a previous implant in left hand in 2009 which has worked great. That implant is not made any longer. I am now able to use my right hand for almost everything! Still doing OT twice weekly. My hand surgeon did 2 dry surgeries before using me as his first patient. I'm glad I did it and I have great confidence in him. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Chronic osteo in both thumbs. C-MC fusion in 2003 (age 61), worked well, still does, about 4-6 weeks recovery. Arthroplasty on other thumb 2014, worked well, longer recovery, still fine now in 2019. Personal preference: C-MC fusion by competent orthopedist specializing in hands and wrists.

I recently had surgery by a hand specialist on left thumb for bone on bone arthritic thumb. After fairly easy initial 6 weeks recovery and now no use of pain meds, I am about 80% recovered using my hand and thumb as normal. I still have some pain at surgical site and stiffness in my hand. Each day I seem to get a little better and am optimistic about full recovery. While in waiting room to see surgeon for follow up I ran into old friend how had same surgery a year prior who said her experience was great. No pain today and full use of hand.

I have had bone-on-bone in both thumbs with multiple steroid shots for the past three years,but the shots no longer work. Reports on surgical outcomes are varied, even with patients who have found the “best” surgeons. Are their conditions that lead to a better result? A better surgeon? Better OTs? Younger patients? Still Wondering.

@cdbell For my thumbs I use a brace to stabilize my thumb at times ice and Dr gave me voltaren but its expensive for seniors to much for me .

The generic diclofenac isn't expensive
