Headaches Without A Name

Posted by Gem @gemmax, May 8, 2018

Approximately one month ago, just as I was drifting off to sleep I began to have sharp pains in the left side of my head just above the temple.( I know what a migraine is and this is not one. I had severe migraines from 12 yrs old until 54 years old.) This pain in my head got worse until it seemed unbearable.I still have the headpain. Pain medication helps some for awhile, but nothing makes it go away completely.I am also dizzy. The two doctors that I have seen seem to think that it has something to do with sllergies or is a migraine of some kind.I went for my regular dental checkup and the dentist discovered a cracked wisdom tooth that will have to be removed or have a crown. It is the bottom tooth on the same side as the head pain. There is also pain in my neck and ear on the same side. Has anyone had anything like this? I have Sjogren’s, temporal lobe epilepsy and several other illnesses..Could it be the tooth causing this? The dentist told me that the nerve for that tooth is extensive. I am going to have the work done on Friday. The headpain was so severe when it began that I thought that I was having some sort of event. Any ideas or similar headaches?

Sounds like it is related. i am very sorry it hurts so bad. My teeth are in terrible shape, the ones remaining. I rember a back molar caused similar headache when I was young and received a crown. It went right away, so am hopeful yours will. It's hard on me, I have several that need to come out but money is tight. Is your toorh and nerve hurting?

I'm so glad you have had your tooth worked on and that you feel better! Thanks for your kind words as well. I'm curious about why you are having a crown put on a wisdom tooth? I had all my wisdom teeth pulled in my 20s. They were growing sideways. My dentist at the time said we really don't need the wisdom teeth. That's why I'm wondering why you're having the expense of a crown, rather than having the tooth extracted?

By the way, you are a very compassionate communicator. Your posts are beautiful.

@gail when I was young I lost several molars when I had severe anemia and a thyroid disorder. The dentist offered either option, but I dont have a lot of chewing surface left that is from my real teeth. My wisdom teeth are not impacted as is the case with many people . You are right about not needing them, unless you have my problems. Also, removing it would likely have caused a flare of Sjogren’s and muscle inflammation making my symptoms worse and even forcing me to bed., even with antibiotics. any sort of “wound” such as a surgery or invasive tests make me sicker. Thank you for your concern. Sometime it is difficult to figure out th best thing to do. I do hope that I can be helpful to others. Gem

@gemmax I have severe TMJ which caused severe headaches for 2 years. Yes, figuring out the best thing to do is difficult. My ache went waaaay beyond an ache. The first OD claiming to a TMJ specialist made things worse. I was reluctant to try again. This time I did more research. My current DDS recommended another specialist after doing what he could to get my gums healthy as the other DDS and his staff were not cleaning my teeth properly. I paid the first one a lot of money and assuage myself by saying, "he and his staff did the best they knew how".
I had no abscessed teeth-it was my bite and the fact that my right mandibular joint was completely out of socket due to mistakes of the 1st OD calling himself a specialist. As yet there are no special requirements for any dentist claiming to be such...Beware.
Now with a qualified hygienist my gums are completely healed. The 2nd specialist is a specialist. Some mistakes that have been made were costly as insurance will not pay for this kind of thing. Dentures for me are not an option. I did lose 4 teeth due to the ignorance of the other specialist. I do wonder how some self-claimed specialists sleep at night.
I realize TMJ may not be the cause of head pain (more than an ache in my case) for many.
Mayhap this comment can help someone

I am praying that teeth just falling out I'd part of my RA. If someone did not know me, they WD think I was a meth user. My teeth look so bad. About 6 months ago, the dentist planned to make a lower partial and implant teeth in upper. 20,000 dollars. I agreed and a few days later I had a sore in my mouth left side upper that was so painful. My lip was getting bigger. I called and cancelled my 20,000
Job and then my teeth started falling out.
Ok, I hope it was not the dentist. He is a very nice man. To say the least, he was upset. Now for 6000.00 he is taking out the broken teeth, repairing eye teeth, two root canals and making an upper parthal.
I pray it goes well.

I insist on antibiotics BEFORE dental work. I have no idea if it will help. I have heart disease and I must be careful.

Your not taken as complaining, it's normal to ask questions and be concerned. Hoping your procedure goes well and you heal fast.

I appreciate your posting about the other procedures and complications. My lung surgeon had to watch a cavitary nodule for two yrs. (It was dx. two months after a horrendous infection and extraction of tooth near sinus). With RA, psoriatic, and Sjogrens he could never be certain of its cause. Having other bad teeth and lack of money to fix makes me worry too.

This site is wonderful for us to get a lot of our questions and feelings out. Sending support and hugs for Friday.

Julie
