Post-Nissen Fundoplication Problems: What helps?
<p>I had a nissen wrap operation in 1999. I still have problems at night after about 4 hours of sleep. I've tried all kinds of drugs to help relieve the gas. Right now I am on 40 mg of pantoprazole in the morning before breakfast. Most of the time days are fine. I have problems being regular on bowl movements, so I have a high amt of gas from the meds I take to go number 2. At night is when I have real problems. Any kindred spirits out there?</p>

I have achalesia stage 3, with spasms. I had 10 times the normal pressure in my esophagus before POEM surgery. I since had fundopliacation a year ago . I have extreme gas and bloating as well as pain. They are trying a new medication on me, nortriptyline. And breatbing therapy. At night I must use ambien to sleep and usually wake up 4 or 5 hours later with what they call super gastric belching. I sound like something out of the exorcist. I find adding medical marijuana at night allows me to sleep about 7 hours. I use aciphex, which works better for me. Hope this helps
Thanks for your response and info. I am trying different things. Have started taking my Pantoprazole, 40 mg, at the evening meal an hour before we eat. Seems to help as when I wake up in the night the gas is lower in my body as opposed to being just below my stomach and I can pass it easier. What make my situation worse is I am constipated most of the time and I need to take something for that. Almost everything that stimulates the bowls produces gas------ so, that doesn't help. I can't find my original post so sending this as a general question/second opinion. I have had 3 Nissen Fundoplication repairs to fix a large hiatal hernia that migrated to my chest cavity. The first two came undone within 1 year. The third time they did the repair and also a Wedge Gastroplasty to make my esophogus longer. I have had chronic nausea ever since but dealt with it without many issues. I continued to have to be on reflux meds due to this nausea. Went to a new GI since the past few months swallowing feels difficult or uncomfortable and have been having pain unrelated to eating meals. Hurt with meals and sometimes without. Had an EGD and they saw an ulcer and chronic gastritis. Nissen is in tact. Barium swallow showed no abnormalities. Now i am on meds for the ulcer, increased reflux meds, and on a bland diet until the end of next month when they check on the ulcer again. Has anyone else had this many issues with their stomach? I am starting to feel like it will never be better. It is always something every time. I have had to visit the ER several times for the pain. Any one have thoughts on this? Thanks!!
Gabigirl! I also am having issues. I have pain at times just below middle chest, had my esphogus stretched 11 years ago and have been on omeprazole ever since. Last week had chicken salad that got stuck. Pain in same spot. Seems to feel better when I eat. Going to gastro tomorrow. No issues with swallowing, just that chicken salad, wonāt eat chicken until the doctors.
Iām so sorry you have these issues! It makes my complaints mild. Iāve had issues it seems all my life. People who donāt have no idea how difficult it can be!
@jobarbara I am sorry to hear of so many others having issues as well. š I was so surprised the barium swallow came back normal because I feel like I can feel the food going all the way down super slow and it is nauseating at times. Have you had one of those yet? @dstb83bb I agree. It is tough to explain to people at times.
Gabigirl! Yes when I was first diagnosed with gird 11 years ago. Will see what gastro says tomorrow, I would like him to do endoscopy to make sure everything is ok. Iāve had ultra sound and CT scans last year and everything was normal.

I have had so many tests. I didnāt think the barium swallow would be easy to manage. I did okay but was told I was having issues swallowing - duh, lol. I had jackhammer esophagus. The pressure has subsided since the Poem procedure. However, I do still feel like things are hung in my throat. I havenāt had my post op visit so hoping for answers.
Wow! I hope that you can get some answers too and some relief. I had my gastric emptying study today...I have had them in the past and it comes back normal but we will see.
