shoulder tendenitis/rotator cuff pain

Posted by virtuous69 @virtuous69, Apr 13, 2018

@all. yesterday I sent out a post asking if anyone has/treats their shoulder tendonitis/rotator cuff injury with a sling or shoulder brace? My pt thinks its shoulder tendonitis, but it sure hurts. Internet suggests ice 4 x day, ibuprofen, and not to use shoulder for 48 hours. My arm sling keeps me from using my left arm and lets me have pain free sleep, but I seem to need to be medicated and not lift anything anymore. Lifting grocery bags and water bottles probably started the whole mess. Any comments on slings or braces?? Victorious69

I have tears in both shoulders that were apparently caused by excessive wear and tear since as a very young person i did alot of repetetive lifting that was much too heavy for me. My orthopedist said that surgery would not work, since they would simply tear again. Since I have Chronic pain from auotimmune disease, I had assumed that the pain in my shoulders was just a part of that. I’m sure it adds to the problem. I no longer have pain in my shoulders but I have limited movement, such as the inability to pull a shirt over my head, very limited lifting ability, etc. My doc did not suggest any treatment,.Has anyone else been diagnosed as basically untreatable?

Tai Chi is supposed to be so good for us!!!  Congratulations!!! You are being proactive in your own recovery.  I have a bad rotator cuff myself.  PT helped as long as I was doing it.  My daughter is a PT Assistant and guaranteed me that I would have less pain and greater range of motion I'd I would stick with it.  Peace and light.

@oregongirl girI practice gentle stretching and and I walk when I can, moving my arms, only in a “slow walk”.I stopped all attempts to ilft more than 2-3 pounds. I am able to do some light gardening, but if they hurt at all, I stop immediately. I need help with getting dressed at times and always with things like coats and sweaters and sweatshirts and my socks and shoes as well. I’m 69. This has been going on for a long time now. I also support my upper back and shoulders when I sit to do anything, as I am doing now.

@artscaping falling is a real risk for those of us who have these problems, you are not only brave having the surgeries you have had, but wise to consider your limitations. No moe falls for you!!!

@bonnieh218, @gemmax and others at risk of falling. My friend Debra Rose heads the Fall Prevention organization you can find at stopfalls.org. Lots of good information. Wish I had known about her before I started falling. My friends even locked themselves in the car with me for an intervention to try and talk some sense into my adventuresome albeit careless head. Wish I had known about Debra before I started falling. Hope some of you can avoid the perils of falling by becoming more aware of the risks of falling. Please take good care.

@gemmax hi gemmax and others. Gem did you have shoulder surgery?
I like your comments on what you are able to do. Dragging heavy groceries up our mobile home stairs with a rolling cart was my own fault and your personal routine sounds encouraging, if only I could kneel to garden. I will try walking and swinging arms gently.
prob is we are suppoosed to be cleaning out our mobile of accumulated 20 years of poor housekeeping due to double hip replacements, spinal and cervical stenosis. Somehow your post encouraged me.
PT thot that I have shoulder tendonitis. My PC has ordered an MRI for me which I,m debating on.I,m wearing a shoulder sling to help restrict me from using my left arm
for lifting and carrying things.but pain is 24|7 and use advil and Norco. was given two simple excercises which I forget to do as I have so many other pain issues and can no longer afford my PT who was great with ultra sound and massage.

@artscaping Thanks so much for the info. I need to pay closer attention. I have fallen so many times, in stores, in parking lots, at home.My balance is so poor due to shoulder problems, ear problems and general muscle inflammation and pain. I need to find a way to remind myself to be careful!

@virtous69 No the orthos said they were so bad that they would simply tear again..I confess that I was surprised to hear the truth. it just seems like everyone wants operate. I’mm not sure that that is a fair statement, but...On kneeling to garden...I have to have something nearby that I can help myself get up,my muscles are so painful that I don't move well at all and that is a separate issue from my shoulders.I am glad that you were encouraged. Keep being so! No matter what, there is always something good in this life if we look. On massage, I just read in a magazine about back massage using tennis balls. (you may have heard of this one) but this suggested that those of us who cannot get up from the floor can do this on any blank wall. I am going to try this one. Keep writing! Have a good night’s rest.

I was diagnosed with bilateral rotator cuff syndrone. Symptoms: pain, increasing weakness—unable to lift cup of coffee, opening doors, steering car, lifting, etc. Tried to correct using personal trainer familiar with problem, but was I unable to do the work because of the pain. Finally went to orthopedic surgeon for cortisone shots on both sides which reduced pain immediatly down considerably to 10 per cent and to zero next morning. The doctor said she wouldn’t give me the shots unless I followed up with an experienced physical therapist (PT) because relief from the cortisone shots are only temporary and treat the symptoms and not the cause. Good advice. I got to work with a PT who helped maintain my pain free status and I still workout regularly doing what I couldn’t with a personal trainer before the shots. Today my shoulder strength and range of motion are 100 per cent. Last July 2017 shortly after my 81st birthday I was diagnosed with Giant Cell Arteritis, and am not sure if related to shoulders. I am grateful for the wonderful medical care I have received for the past 10 months.
