Has anyone had a PAO (Periacetabular Osteotomy)?
Hello,
I had an encephalomyelitis when I was 7 (I am 24 now) and due to that I developed hip dysplasia for which I had surgery at 12 (at least the traumatologist thought that the hip dysplasia was because I have an hemiparsesis and I have an abnormal movement in my right half body). The surgery is called acetabuloplasty.
I have been visiting another doctor for a while (recommended by the last one) and on the last visit, he told me that maybe I can benefit from a modern surgery that "moves my hip" in order to prevent having a total hip replacement. He wants me to do some tests first to see the condition of my hip joint and acetabulum. He didn't mention the name of the surgery, but I have been investigating the surgeon he mentioned, a specialist on this kind of surgery, and the surgery is a PAO.
I will visit the doctor in a month with the tests results, but I am gathering information and experiences about this kind of surgery and the outcomes. Most of the experiences I read are positive but there are others that are catastrophic. I would like to know if any member of this group has had a surgery of this kind and their experience. I have seen that mayo clinic perform this surgery.

I have no info on this but I wish you really good luck getting accurate info and making your decision
Hello @vicaba! Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! We are glad to have you here. Thank you for posting about PAO (Periacetabular Osteotomy).
I was able to dig up a little information on Mayo Clinic.org --> https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hip-dysplasia/multimedia/img-20126290. However, I wasn't able to find other members that have had this particular surgery completed. The great thing about Mayo Clinic Connect is- the next member that comes looking for information on PAO will find some here and will be able to connect with you.
While we wait for other members to join, I would like to introduce you to some people that have had either hip replacement or hip dysplasia or avascular necrosis and hopefully will be willing to share experience, thoughts, ideas and/or information with you. I'm sure you will find some of the other members stories and experiences useful and be able to relate to your own. Without further ado, I would like to introduce you to @grandmacheryl, @rspaulling, @popolopo, @leigh60, and @tallteri, @sma1952, @dzoneill and @lynzze . All, if you don't mind- please offer some thoughts on how long the recovery took and what to expect.
@mschock @jamienolson Thank you!
