@agb, I did a little more looking so I could give you better information about the ceramide testing I mentioned. Mayo Clinic Laboratories describes MI-Heart Ceramides (CPT 0119U) as a blood test used to help evaluate the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events within the next 1–5 years.

Something I found particularly interesting is that Mayo says the risk information from ceramides is independent of LDL cholesterol and several other cardiovascular markers. In other words, it may provide information about cardiovascular risk that isn’t already reflected in those results. It doesn’t replace the usual testing, but may add another piece of information.
