I received a silver letter opener over 40 years ago, I keep in my pen/pencil holder and as long as I can get the point under the "lip" of the envelope it works fine. Some new fangled envelopes have a "lift and tear" type, which are impossible.....maybe I don't know how to "lift and tear" properly

Me, too, Victoria! Mine is a 7" stainless steel with sterling silver (whoa - tongue twister!!) blade - a wedding gift 58 years ago from my family dentist and his wife. At the time I thought it was the most useless gift we could have received. For a number of years now, I have used it constantly - several times a day for one thing or another - and I could have written the same words that @joanland wrote a few posts down. My secondary one is the l-o-n-g silver metal one my parents had, kept in that secondary place for fewer uses.
