my grandma too. they lived in Chicago...she kept string pieces and wound them up...my other grandparents lived in a small town in Michigan...Grandpa was the only doctor in town..during the Depression he did not charge people if they could not afford it and was given food at the doorstep...Grandma had a garden.

@cjarlottematheny My father was an optometrist, not during depression. We lived in a tiny village in Northern California in early 1950s. He did same thing. I remember him getting a chicken at his office in our home.

Your grandparents truly operated with the Golden Rule philosophy. Irregardless of one’s religious affiliation it is incumbent on all of us to extend a helping hand to anyone in need. I don’t say it’s easy, but I do believe by extending ourselves in the service of others we benefit as much as those receiving.
