Yes, Octreotide seems to work better if one has diarrhea from Carcinoid syndrome and needs to have less bathroom visits, it can be a real plus. However for those who do not deal with Carcinoid syndrome one needs a Doctor's assistance and/or a good nutritionist because it can slow down motility and bloating. In addition to the focus on dietary adjustments, meal timing, and close coordination with your physician to determine Miralax need and scheduling.
A nutritionist can help with adapting a diet to :
Eat small meals more often during the day up to five or six a day.
Modify fat intake
Avoid carbonated drinks
Reduce fat intake
A quick AI search states "Because octreotide chemically alters your entire digestive system, you must work closely with your healthcare provider rather than trying to override these symptoms entirely on your own. Your doctor can investigate and treat the precise underlying causes of your bloating"
Your Doctor might check if your constipation/poor motility is from the Ochtreatide, Sibo, Gall Bladder concerns, mechanical blockage or something else.
Sounds as if you are doing a remarkable job on your own, but I needed input and follow-up to find the right reason and the guidance to stick to the diet I needed. I know it is difficult to find the right nutritionist and a medical situation in which we get the help we need.. but you have already stated the problem and what you have done to try to correct it. Now, I hope you can find some assistance. I had to request a nutritionist. My oncologist did not suggest one. Sometimes a Primary can also assist in finding a solid nutritionist who works with your oncologist. Wishing you well, and am impressed that you have named the symptoms and already actively adapting your eating ..

@maeve115 Thank you so much for your reply and the extra information you've given me. I did get advice from a nutritionist early in my treatment with Octreotide in 2023, mainly to help me with the constipation it caused right away. I got the ideas of what type of foods might help and the Miralax. I discovered on my own that really fatty foods make me bloat and uncomfortable with a distended stomach.
I should really ask for another appointment with her to discuss further. I don't see my doctor except for every 4 months or so, just go in for the shots and blood tests. At no time has he discussed the causes of bloating and stomach distension.
I have another problem of labile hypertension, with a BP that goes up as the day goes on, especially high around dinner time. I have to carefully time my eating with how my BP is controlled by my meds, since "slow motility" of a meal can mean that if my BP meds are combined with a lot of food, they won't work for hours and I can go very high.
The wacky hypertension was caused by breast cancer drugs, and I'm now stuck with it. I'm off the drugs. Two cancer diagnoses at the same time is not fun but it's what is.
The two things you suggest I should do more of is have smaller meals more often and being vigilant about fat intake, especially saturated fat. Thanks, Maeve, for your ideas!
