Hello Francine,
I am 68 years old now, and I had a T10 to Pelvis Fusion along with Bilateral SI Joint Fusions in May 2025.
( A previous Harrington Rod was left in my back from a T2 to L2 Scoliosis surgery I had at 19 years of age. With this latest surgery new rods were added, with one connecting to the old rod.)
My recovery is going well and at my last follow-up, at the 1 year mark, my surgeon stated that my back is fusing well and all hardware in place.
The recovery is long, but for me the surgery has been life changing. My presurgery chronic pain is gone! 😊
But I do still get mild to moderate back pain (3 to 4, maybe 5 range) if I sit more than 30 to 45 minutes. My back feels great when I walk! No problems sleeping.
I still have presurgery numbness and tingling in my right calf, and, occasionally my foot. Hopefully, the numbness will go away with time, as my nerves are no longer being pinched. I was told that nerve issues can take 1 -2 years to go away, and sometimes they never do.
I walk 2 miles a day, (even with the numbness which changes in gradation), and I exercise daily. I have an excellent physical therapist that I see once a week. Yes, I still ice and heat as needed.
In my opinion, during the first year post-op, the more time you and your caregiver devote to proper rehab and the precautions,
the better your outcome will be.
I credit much of my success to :
1) my spine surgeon--Neurosurgeon Jeremy Fogelson,
and
2)my Sacroilliac surgeon Orthopedic Surgeon, William Cross Ill.
Both are at Mayo Clinic Rochester.
Best Wishes to everyone!
Nadine
