@jc76 The newest pacemaker devices are small enough to go directly into the heart. There is nothing under the skin. They are implanted via a catheter through a vein. One feels nothing.

Because there is no device under the skin, there is also no restriction on movement, save the first week when the opening in the vein needs to heal.

I just with this had been around 20 years ago. I am on my 3rd device and another coming up in one year. I have 4 wires that are on my heart. They are screw in and one static.

I think I remember taking them out is not an option as they become seated. I found this out on one that needed replacing and it was left in place.

For all those in the process of getting a pacemaker should explore this new version. I am not sure if ICDs can be done this way and mine is a dual device both ICD and Pacemaker.
