Sirius XM radio(subscription fee) has a 'doctors' radio channel where some endocrinologists advise staying on HRT for life(not individualized but general information to callers). Extenuating conditions such as perhaps bleeding uterine fibroids may be a condition to discontinue.
I was on HRT for 5 years but my bone mineral density in my 50s continued to decline until I went on fosamax. It then improved after 4 years on fosamax(from -2.6 to -1.9 in femural neck) and I am now on a drug holiday(off the fosamax-but still on estradiol patch). Once off the fosamax for 2 years, I will get a new bone density test.

@dtevis Thank you, this is gold. The level of detail you've shared makes such a difference for someone like me who's just trying to understand the different treatment pathways. I may be one of those people with extenuating circumstances, so that's another discussion I'm currently having with my GP. And congratulations on improving your femoral neck from -2.6 to -1.9—that's a fantastic result. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience.
