@kfhoz I was with other doctors before, and first I had 2 shots of Prolea. After the 2nd shot, I had some side effects, like pain in my lower back. Then the doctor gave me alendronate. It was OK. Then I moved to my current place, I have another doctor, and he decided to give me risedronate even though he knew I had alendronate before. I don't know why he decided so, and he wants me to take it for at least 3 years.

@nataasat Many of us have found that we have to advocate for ourselves in this complicated area of osteoporosis treatment. My doctors have welcomed informed questions and engaged discussion about my care.

You said "I don't know what to do." In your position I would study the medical research and take some research papers to my doctor and ask more questions. Why does he prefer risedronate when research suggests that alendronate is more effective and you already know that you tolerate it? There may be an excellent reason for that.

Alendronate (Fosamax) was approved by the FDA in 1995. Risedronate (Actonel) was approved by the FDA in 2000. So I do not think that being newer at 26 years vs 31 years is going to affect many doctors. But the studies comparing these drugs are newer, so maybe your doctor just needs to see the latest research?
