At the age of 80 (I'm a very active 85 years old now) I had surgery for a complete tear of the minimus and a partial tear of the medius tendons. It took a year and a change of doctors to finally get a diagnosis. I had to wear a brace for 6 weeks and could not put weight on the foot of my affected leg for the same period of time. Not fun, but as a result of the surgery and a good PT I have not had any issues since. Before the surgery I had a great deal of pain in my hip and leg. I hope you have an outcome that will be as good as mine.
