Salty Facts – Heart Failure and Sodium

I stopped eating animals 52 yrs ago, and went vegan in 2009. With that said, I do TRY to watch my salt intake, cooking 99% of everything I eat from scratch. Yet I know I am addicted to salt. I will buy processed foods to eat as a treat, not a daily habit, but I have a vegan food pantry and I'm trying to get international foods for them to try, but salt is needed often. I taste the food before setting out in the bins. Often making salt-free homemade breads. In short, it's very hard to eliminate salt from everything I make. If I have celery, I want salt on it, or peanut butter. Taking away all of my pleasures, ie: salt, feels like I'm being unkind to myself. Any suggestions to a saltaholic?

Hi, @msmarymac. I see you joined Mayo Clinic Connect recently. It’s nice to “meet” you.

I try not to use much salt either. I found a Kirkland Organic No-Salt Seasoning at Costco. It is tasty, and I haven’t figured out a reason why I shouldn’t be using it.

I am curious if you don’t mind sharing, what is your motivation behind watching your salt intake?

@msmarymac I use NuSalt which is a salt substitute which is potassium chloride rather than sodium chloride. Taste like salt to me!

@msmarymac I also like salty foods. I try to avoid and instead replace with other flavors that give a similar bite i.e. lemon. I cook everything from scratch and use a lot of spices when cooking to add to the fla
vor without using salt.
