My pump was just changed from morphine to dilaudid. Morphine didn't help at all. The max dose my doc would give me is 1 mg per day, concentration was 2mg per mL. It's nothing but pure torture to go to the doc every week to have it decreased, this was a 6 week process. They filled my pump with dilaudid and then i had to wait 2 weeks to "flush catheter" They gave me my first increase last week and I will go every week to have it increased until I reach the max dose, which is probably 1 mg.
No doctor that I know of gives pain pills anymore, and i mean NO pain pills... They are just gonna cause the suicide rate to go up. This is my 2nd pump, my first was set at a very high dose but my doc says thats why i have a growth on my spine, its from the medicine, can't remember what they call it but its not cancer or anything... He did say if the pain gets bad enough that i can't take it, go to ER for pain shot.. My pump is set at .09 right now.
I understand the pain pill epidemic, but the ones who have genuine chronic pain have to pay the price for a bunch of drug addicts, its not right...

@davidc2569 When you had your trial, I assume that morphine did not help. What was the result with dilaudid? I had no relief from morphine in my trial by injection. However, the trial with dilaudid dropped my pain down to a 2 from about an 8. Unfortunately, the permanent implant has not provided me with any pain relief. I am just over three years on this thing and I had ONE DAY of decent pain relief. Go figure. I was at a high of 3.5 mg/24 hrs with six boluses. My PM doc told me that 1 mg/24 hrs was a pretty low dose. Get some dosages from folks here on Mayo and show it to your doc. Might help him/her change his mind.
