I’m 62…newly diagnosed with severe osteoporosis back score is -3.4 and hips are -2.8 and -2.9. I’m very active…hiking, biking, kayaking, yoga, Pilates and have great balance. I recognize the biking and kayaking don’t help the osteoporosis. Drug choices I’m being given are: Tymlos, Forteo or Evenity. They all sound ominous with the side effects, cost and self injection fear. I’m honestly terrified. Any insight on choosing a drug would be helpful. Insurance coverage will be minimal (deductible is $9k, they’ll pay 50% after that is met).

@bharris202 Don't be terrified. Most people don't have any side effects, or have mild ones which go away. Some have problems, but you won't know until you try.

Forteo should be cheaper because it has a generic (teriparatide.) There is no generic for Tymlos. But, the Tymlos manufacturer does have a discount card that you can give to the pharmacy. It provides, I believe, up to $6000/year in reduced cost. We use it for my wife, and her very first month, she had a $500 copay, and the $500 was covered by this discount card. What is more interesting is that her insurance company applied $500 to her deductible even though she actually didn't pay anything.

@bharris202 contact the drug companies. Often they'll cover part of the cost.
