How to disclose your diagnosis?

@gingerw any advice on what sharing bits and pieces might look like?

For example, my parents are against pretty much all medications. I do mention my frequent trips to Walgreens (close enough to my house where I can bike ride there in the summer with my kids) and my mom occasionally asks, very suspiciously, what are you doing at Walgreens every week??? I do a lot more than take meds, but it’s just a fact meds are a huge part of the way I manage this illness.

The main driver for me is that my young kids know I have bipolar and I would rather the info doesn’t make its way around secondhand. I always tell the kids it’s not a secret, but it’s not your information to share.

It’s really sad that your parents look at mental illness that way. Ask you Mom if she would deny a diabetic insulin. It’s no different. Their pancreas doesn’t work properly and our brains are lacking chemicals. To deny medication is denying a necessity of life. If you can handle your illness without medication that’s great but you “need what you need” . It it sounds like you have an official diagnosis of bipolar. I don’t know anyone with bipolar that isn’t on medication. I have OCD, anxiety and depression. I was spinning my wheels until I got the right medication. It’s amazing the difference. Don’t deny yourself a chance to live a full life. Why would anyone be against that ? Why are your parents against medication?
