Male with neurogenic bladder: what are my options?

Posted by 2will2 @2will2, Mar 5 12:46pm

I’ve been diagnosed with a neurogenic bladder. I’ve been presented two options one self catheterization and the second supra surgery. I’m frightened of the whole situation. Who has experience with these two options?

Well, when writer thank you for the information. I have this fully gathered in me since December. I don’t mind it. It’s become a way of life. I empty the bag just before I get in bed at 11:30 and I emptied it again when I get out of bed at 6 AM, it’s usually around 900. During the course of the day I emptied it when it seems to be getting an all kind of heavy you know or uncomfortable I should say for me to bounce around with it. I am due to get a special bladder test next week to see if my bladder is expelling anything which I don’t think it is. Then in two weeks I see the urologist to discuss possibly long-term. I certainly wouldn’t mind doing this long-term I feel comfortable with it. I’m used to it, and my life has adjusted to it. I will be honest with you. I am frightened and scared to do the self catheterization when I see I have to self authorize and stick that tube into my penis and all the way up to my bladder 5 times a day. Truly, it scares me. Thank you for your information in anything else you might be able to share. I have a nice day.

Windrider,
Sorry it’s me again. You take any type of supplements like cranberry or other medications on a daily basis to help water off UTIs? Also, what about diet? Are there different foods or types of foods you do not eat because they aggravate the lining of the bladder or or the different foods that you do eat because they help word off UTIs? The tube that goes from Russia that goes from inside my penis to the stabilizer I wipe down every morning and evening with what it is called ready cleanse mental and Perineal, cleansing cloth. They did this when I was in the hospital and this is the type of wipe they use so I continue to do it. I do fine at times when I might call a little bit of residual buildup on the tube. I do clean up twice a day and the same thing with that type of cloth. I always make sure i wipe around the opening of my penis and the rest of my penis head. I’m concerned about UTIs and I try to do what I feel is best than what has been kind of recommended to me. Please if you have any hands or suggestions what do you think I might do or not do I really would appreciate them. Thank you.

@2will2 I do drink a little pure, cranberry juice (not cranberry drink) or take cranberry pills twice a day. i’m not sure that there’s any scientific evidence for this, but keeping the urine acidic makes sense to me. There is normally a little bit of discharge from the urethra during the day, but it cleans up easily in the shower in the morning. I use a valve instead of a leg bag during the day (actually at night too) just because it’s more comfortable and I can wear shorts, etc.
Please let me know if I can answer any more questions. And good luck to you.

@windrider354 you’re the second man recently who mentioned the valve. Could you tell me more about it and why you like it.
Thanks

@2will2 please forward the details of this valve. I have to urinate 7 times during the night. This has been on going for over a year since BGC for bladder cancer. Plus severe stabbing pain daily.
Thanks

I have an in dwelling catheter connected to a fully bag. Neurologist wants to do something different in the near future. He was talking about self catheterization, which I really am very apprehensive about. If I keep the indwelling catheter, this catheterization valve is attached to the end of it instead of to a fully bag. There’s a valve on it and I can release the urine in my bladder and reach out to three hours instead of inserting a catheter into my penis every two or three hours. At night a fully bag is hooked up to the valve so it drains automatically during the night and I shouldn’t have to get up. Wish you luck with what’s happening by you and whatever you were going to do. And never realized there were so many men and similar situations as you and I. Hang in there, friend.

@toentje The valve is a simple device that plugs into the end of the Foley catheter. I have been using it 24/7 for about three years (changing every month). You can tuck it inside your underwear or, I suppose, use it with a stabilizing band like you would with a bag. It simply avoids a leg bag and night bag so you can wear shorts, etc. An alternative would be to use it during the day and keep the night bag to avoid getting up multiple times during the night. I usually get up about three times. The valves are available from Amazon, brand name ugo (cute huh?).

Good morning. Can I ask why you don’t use the night bag so that you can sleep through the night? Is it difficult to switch to the night back? Right now I have the catheter in the Foley bag hanging down my leg. I’m really looking forward to getting rid of this huge bag hanging on my side. I really would like to do what you’re doing with the valve. It sounds like I’d have more of a normal type of life. Any suggestions you can give me your things I should ask or tell the doctor when I go to see him next month? Thank you for your time.
