Diet for Osteoporosis

Posted by gen55 @gen55, 3 days ago

Wondering who has found a good diet and recipes to aid in osteoporosis. I've been researching the best foods and there is so much out there. Trying to find one good source that I can use as my go to for recipes and information.

All I have ever seen is eat calcium rich foods, like dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods. I don’t do dairy and fortified foods usually means cereals with a lot of junk! Stay away from processed foods they have high sodium, sugar, alcohol and caffeine. Carbonated beverages as well.
Fruits, veggies, fatty fish(I’m not a fan), nuts and seeds…I take supplements! Calcium, Vitamin D with K2, magnesium and Omega-3’s.

Why do you say meds don't rebuild the bones? The bisphosphonates slow bone loss, but the anabolics do build bones.

@babs10

The Anabolics may build bone but after that they put you on another med.
no meds build bone and stay that way and then there are fracture risks as well from the meds.

I’ve been recently diagnosed with osteoporosis and figuring out what to eat and what not to can be exhausting. I did download the Cronometer app to help keep track of my protein, calcium, vitamin D, Omega 3’s and other vitamins. I now make smoothies for breakfast, I had been using almond milk for awhile because I thought it’d be better than regular milk. Apparently I was wrong it has oxalates in which can negatively impact calcium absorption, so switched to 1%. Was also using a power green mix then read that Swiss chard and spinach also are high in oxalates, so switched to kale. Again it’s exhausting, I miss the days of my youth when I was oblivious. lol The app really does help though, especially with keeping track of the protein. I was really slacking there. I also now weigh and measure all my food, it’s tedious, but I feel better knowing how much of the above nutrients I’m getting daily.

Omega 3’s in food seem to be the best combat food. Many are high in 6’s which harm your bones. Carlson lemon flavored liquid fish oil is yummy and I use one capful on my salad or just straight from bottle.
Prunes, walnut’s , flax milk, ground flax, chia seeds. All help.
I love avocado and olive oil and they are high in omega 6’s. I counter the 6’s with more 3’s.

Now if I could figure out what protein powder is best to add to my smoothies. Any recommendations ?

I use avocado oil for making popcorn, which is my comfort food. I didn’t know that about Omega 6’s, jeez you just can’t win. I use 2 TB of flax in my smoothies along with 1% milk and 1/2 c Greek yogurt, 1oz power greens, 1/2 c of blueberries and strawberries. That gets me 23gm of protein and 500mg calcium. I’ve thought about adding protein powder, but I worry about what’s in them.

@gen55, I understand that, believe me. So far, I'm in that same boat.

What I didn't understand was saying anabolics don't build bones because they do.

@babs10 those were not options from my doctor. He didn't want to try me on that option

@bswpb I've been looking into Shelly Mannings Bone Density Solution. She has really good reviews, and lots of facts and easy to understand information.

Really, you want to make sure you're getting protein (healthy protein, not Big Macs), and calcium from food where possible. Vitamin D3.

@njx58 Vitamins D3 WITH Vitamin K.

Vitamin K is important. It directs calcium to your bones first.

@meri8181 I did the exact same with Carlson lemon fish oil. It’s absolutely delicious on salads.

My third OP doc told me to “look up” calcium rich foods and to tally what I eat every day.

So I made a notebook and added my favorite foods with calcium counts and keep a daily log. (No, I am not interested in yet another app. 😂) And, of course, read every label there is.

I get 1,200 mg from food every day, and my “mature” multivitamin has 220 mg of calcium, so I’m doing well overall. The doc seems happy, but I did this all on my own.

Hope this helps! It’s not a perfect system, but it’s working for me.
