Does any neurologist prescribe Alpha Lipoic Acid?

My neurologist at Duke suggested I try it along with Pregabalin. After about six months I stopped taking the Alpha Liponic Acid and detected no change. That is to say it did not seem to help vs just taking Pregabalin by itself.

I’ve been taking ALA for several years. I can’t tolerate Gabapentin at all. The ALA I take is from Amazon, but it’s available everywhere.

I take 600 mg. twice a day.

@cynbell I woke up in 2021 two days after I decided to retire and I wondered what the heck was going on. I had pin pricks (paresthesia) from head to toes and in my eyes going off 24/7. After waiting for months I saw a Neurologist. They did major blood work and found nothing. So I agreed to a skin biopsy. It came back with Small Nerve Fiber Neuropathy, Idiopathic (meaning no known cause). And non length dependent meaning it didn’t start in my feet and go up. So he told me to take Alpha Lipoic Acid 600mg daily. I did and it made a huge difference. The pin pricks went down to almost nothing. But the pricks are ramping up. I am sure it is due to what is going on in my neck. All the discs have stenosis and I have two discs (one after the other that the ligamentum flavum has infolded also causing stenosis. Alpha Lipoic Acid works.

In my experience integrative and functional medicine doctors prescribe it, but not my neurologist. I do find it helps me. My integrative doc wants me to take a combo with NAC but I prefer single ingredients and right now am only taking ALA.
