Recent Reclast Experience

Posted by beaglemom09 @beaglemom09, Jun 8, 2025

For those interested, I had my first Reclast infusion on Thursday at 3 pm. I was really anxious about the side effects. I did as others have suggested and drank LOTS of water and started Tylenol the night before and then every 8 hours since. The evening of the infusion I felt just a little "off". Rested and watched TV. Slept well until 6 am when I woke and realized it hurt to take a deep breath. Not lung issues but my ribs and muscles in my diaphragm area hurt really bad. Continued with Tylenol and drinking water. Then pain all over started. I was tired and slept on and off. By 6 pm, I was really hurting. I was freezing cold and got under a heated blanket. I did not have a fever. I took muscle relaxer and a hydrocodone (I had both due to previous back pain issue) and finally got relief. Went to bed at my usual time and slept well. I put two Tylenol on my nightstand to take when I got up to pee. When I woke up yesterday, I was 50% better. By the evening I was feeling 80% better. Today I feel back to normal. I'm sharing my experience to let those of you who are deciding whether or not to do it can make an informed decision. Everyone reacts differently. I am one who has always experienced the worst side effects of meds so I was worried. Reclast was my only option due to GERD and my insurance denying Prolia. I am hopeful this will help with my osteoporosis. I think one day of pain is worth it for lowing my risk of a spine fracture. I hope my story helps someone.

@beaglemom09: Your experience with RECLAST side-effects were certainly memorable! I am sorry that you had to go through such scary days, not knowing what was happening to cause such discomfort. You are a real trouper to tough it out for so many hours. It does prove that your intelligence helped you find ways to cope and relieve the pain.
Thank you for sharing this with us, for it helps us prepare for this side effect of Osteoporosis treatment and make informed decisions.
I agree with you that we need to prioritize Osteoporosis bone building and bone stability over the discomfort the treatment may have. Our goal is to repair and/or strengthen our bones to prevent falls and fractures! I am proud of you! You have helped so many of us who have Osteoporosis, are treating this disease and faced with future treatment. May you have better health to come…

Thank you for sharing. I did not have any side effects until about 4 months later. I started having pain and loss of strength in my left arm which was the arm my infusion was done. I will say after about a month the pain is subsiding, even though I still have limited use of my arm. Hopefully it continues to get better.

Thank you for sharing. My experience has been awful and Im Wondering if anyone else has had the same reaction that I have. Last year I had my first infusion of reclast. That night I had flu symptoms that lasted for 2 days. About a week after the infusion I bent over to pick something up and was in severe pain in my right hip all the way down my right leg. I could hardly put any weight on my leg. After a week I could walk but mild pain lasted 6 weeks. Thinking it was a fluke I did get my 2nd infusion a few weeks ago. No flu symptoms this year but did get the severe pain again this time my left hip all the way down my leg. Guess it wasnt a fluke. Another week in bed and hoping it goes away soon. It has been debilitating.

I am so sorry this has happened to you. It is discouraging to be trying to do something to help our condition and then it turn on us. I pray with time and extra care you will get over this very soon.

I had a reclast infusion about 1 year ago. I had no side effects whatsoever for the entire year. I am going for my second infusion in 2 weeks. I am hoping for the same result. I go for a bone density test in November. I hope to have a positive result to make it all worthwhile. I am sorry to hear about everyones bad experiences.

I had my first Reclast infusion this morning and have felt really tired and all of a sudden I am having a hard time taking a deep breath and my rib cage hurts. I’ve been taking Tylenol but plan to take a muscle relaxer at bedtime. I hope this goes away quickly. I also have some nausea.

@beaglemom09 Thank you for sharing your experience. Now that about 10 months have gone by, can you share if you have had any bone density tests that show improvement? Thanks!

I will have a bone density test in Jan to see where my numbers are. (That will be 2 yrs since the last one) My CTX score was 685 before the reclast and 3 months later they retested it and it was down to 150. My doctor said that's a win for Reclast. I will have another CTX blood test in 3 months. I have chosen not to have a second Reclast in June which is a year after the first. If my CTX comes back high, then my endocrinologist suggests I do another infusion. I'm feeling confident that all will be ok.

Hmmm I am seeing endo mid April; blood work ordered so we will discuss I am sure at this appointment. Reclast July 2025, (was supposed to be in April, but I put it off due to fear!) but he did not want me to do a DEXA yet, was told we would discuss at appointment. I am a bit confused by this, was told at last year's appointment that DEXA is once a year if diagnosed with osteo, which would be about now. Before last July's Reclast infusion my CTX was at 58, but the only reason I know that is I asked for it...I don't think my doc does bone markers regularly; I know some don't rely on them. It is on my current blood work order, along with NTX. And CTX was between fosamax and reclast; I've read that a baseline of these tests before osteo meds is more typical? Would love to hear from anyone who has had DEXA after one year of Reclast, and what T scores are!
